Luke Rainbird
So the wheels I went to check out earlier were a set of apparently genuine BBS CHs. Turns out that they're not the real deal and are actually reps, however having had a chat with the seller and calling him out on this he's reduced the price and I've paid £350 for a set of decent-looking rims with new tyres on which I don't think is too bad since I would have been spending around that to replace the full set on the 17s". They were advertised as being pretty scuffed/curbed but I was actually pleasantly surprised on this point. This is the worst of the 4, with another having a couple of light marks but the other 2 being untouched. They fill the arches much better than the standard wheels which is ideal. Similar offset to the starfishes but these are an inch and a half wider. Looks pretty tidy, though due to a combination of the curbing, poor paint job and not being too keen on the colour I think I'm going strip them right back and give them a proper refurb them to silver. Current: Silver: That said... Oh and here's one of the old front tyres - uneven wear FTL. Tracking is all booked in for tomorrow

Pashley26
I love them. I love them lots. Properly gutted they turned out to be reps, I have had Prawn going all afternoon though. Looking forward to seeing it tomorrow and giving it some love, in the photos it looks worlds apart from the car it was on Sunday.
Prawny Baby
had me going? you said the price, I said they were reps, you rambled on some more, I still said they were reps.....Silly mong.Still, who cares, at that money, that's an absolute bloody bargain!SOmehow, rainbird has gone from wolverine look-alike to Gangster in about 3 months flat Looks super-bad-ass 'Bird!

Pashley26
Its not on E38, I'll try and find which forum. It might be on VAG for sale. - Yes Prawn, so true. To me Rainbird hasn't changed in three years and still looks like this (Rainbird and I circa 2010) - But he actually looks like this - Edited April 3, 2013 by Pashley26
RobinJI
Wheels look really smart Luke. As for them being reps: Do they look just as good? Yes. Are they heavier? Maybe. Are they weaker? Maybe. Would you ever notice the difference anyway? Unlikely. Are you a few hundred pounds better off than you would be if they were genuine? Yes. Sounds like a win to me. I've got a bit of an odd question with regards to 1.8t coilpacks. Basically on Sunday I drove for about 3/4 of an hour and the car started missing under load, letting off for a bit then going back on the power didn't help, so it wasn't fuel supply, slowing down and running at lower RPM for a while seemed to do the trick so I figured it must be an ignition component overheating. I finished the trip and being a 1.8t I figured a coilpack was dying, fired a text off to Nick joking about it being inevitable and checking if he reckoned the symptoms fitted, and he said yeah, coil-pack of the ignition amplifier. When the time came to drive home it was getting worse, and before I managed to limp home, it was getting to the point where I was having to stop and let it cool off a few times to get up hills. Now with a single coil-pack shot surely I should be able to drive the car still? It'll sound like shit, and be a bit slow, but there's still 3 cylinder producing more than enough power to get a 900kg car up slope at crawling pace. So before setting off for a mates place the next morning I replaced the ignition amp, thinking it must be that as it's the only thing that'd kill more than one cylinder and actually stop the car. About a mile down the road it started missing badly again, so I pulled over and threw on the spare coilpacks I'd chucked in the car just in case. Problem solved. So my question is: Did I have multiple coilpacks go at once? Or can a single coil dying cause the car to actually grind to a hault? Luke Rainbird
Looking forward to seeing it tomorrow and giving it some love, in the photos it looks worlds apart from the car it was on Sunday.Yeah, it's amazing how much tidier it looks with proper ride height and some wheels that fill the arches a tad more. Still, who cares, at that money, that's an absolute bloody bargain!SOmehow, rainbird has gone from wolverine look-alike to Gangster in about 3 months flat Looks super-bad-ass 'Bird! Thanks, Nick. Much appreciated. The more I see them the more the colour of the wheels is growing on me, but I'd like to keep things looking as OEM+ as possible really so I think silver is the way to go. Currently a little fluffy so need to de-Wolverine again... Ah yes, the surprise bumming incident. My sphincter's still on edge when you're in the vicinity. Wheels look really smart Luke. Considering I was after them for some new rubber and something that looked smart, rather than bragging rights and something expensive to worry about they fit the bill perfectly Strange about the coilpacks, though I've seen mention of people having a couple die at once before so I guess stranger things have happened. Could one going have led to some extra juice killing another perhaps? Not too sure how the setup works under there myself.

RobinJI
Getting yet more tempted by the normal car thing... Said as if talking to a dog: No! Bad Skoze, no! This coilpack thing has further cemented the fact I need something weird old and silly as a daily. Only restrictions being that is has to be old, be an estate and get at least ~30mpg on a good day. (I'll convert whatever it is to LPG in the long run.) The one and only thing that puts me off the idea is crash safety, I love old cars, but as a daily it is a worry. CurtisRider
Does look rather good, very tasteful. Skoze you would be insane to get rid of Bernard, it looks the bomb!
Skoze
Haha, naaaah Bernard's permanent! Unless someone tried to throw £20k at me or something. This winter has made me consider him more as a summer car though with something else to run around in when it gets colder. Then again, i could just stop being a retard and buy myself a nice big heater and some door seals or something

george_seamons
Went with a mate of mine to buy the clone of Rainbird's car...52 plate Cupra. £2150 with a stage 1 remap. Very nice car...leather interior, auto-shizzle blah blah blah. Has given me £1k to modify it. Let the games commence!
CurtisRider
Whats with people giving you money to mod their cars recently? Did you sort the lights on that Vectra you were modding?
Luke Rainbird
Dude's got taste, clearly Should be pretty fun for you though, especially if it's already had a little work done.
george_seamons
Everybody knows I'm a pimp daddy, that's why! The lights only flash 3 times, so it hardly seems worth doing anything about. This weekend I have coilovers to fit to said vectra, some vinyl wrap to apply to the boot strip, and lights to tint. Next weekend I have a downpipe/decat to fit to the Leon, as well as a cat-back exhaust, an FMIC, a Pipercross cone filter, an SFS supersize turbo intake pipe, a thermostat, a coolant temperature sensor, a full service, and rear brake discs and pads. Then at some point in the near future, I have rods to fit to another Leon, and a big turbo install too. ...think I should have been a mechanic!

george_seamons
Jealous of how much stuff you get for £1k with a Cupra compared to an R! Managed to get the supersize TIP, 3" downpipe & decat, cobra non-res cat back exhaust, Pipercross cone filter, fmic kit, rear brakes and pads, genuine thermostat, 5l of G12 coolant, 5l VAG oil, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter (anybody want a new standard filter for postage?!), pollen filter, angled lambda spacer and spark plugs for £870! Said to him to allow £20ish for any gaskets needed, and said £100 to fit it all...and he still has enough change from his £1k for a pint at the end of it! I would have run out of money after the exhaust and fmic on mine, haha!
Danny
Gotta love top model tax. Isn't that exhaust the same as what you'd fit to an R anyway?
george_seamons
Nah, his is 2.5", mine is 3". Plus the downpipes are totally different.
