The Car Thread

Inur, are you logging your AFR? Not sure if that will help anyway....

On the subject of O2 sensors, is it generally accepted that an ECU using a narrowband o2 sensor as stock cannot understand an aftermarket wideband?

I haven't been able to find much information on the subject.

So, Mallory Park is apparently under thread from residents complaining about noise. The tracks been there nearly 60 years and has recently been squeezed in terms of active days allowed and noise limit, to the point where it's struggling to make any money... Don't want car noise at home? Don't move next to a race track!!

That's the best cause that I've ever signed a petition for, ha.

I'm angry because this is the second weekend that I've tried to change the suspension on the brick and failed. First time due to lack of a fairly unique socket that I couldn't even get hold of in Autoparts so had to eBay it. This time due to it being stupendously rusted, so I can't separate the strut from the hub. Gutted, especially because I'm going to a sort of track day on Sunday so I wanted the "lows". :(

The insurance assessor finally called me back and after a 20 minute discussion we just agreed on a price for my Leon Cupra.

His second offer was £2500 but I argued it had nice leather and cruise control, he couldn't find cruise control as a factory option but he eventually agreed to add on extra for the leather interior.

I just got £2737 for a car I paid £2550 11 months ago, not bad :P

The only negative is that I had recently spent out on MOT and Tyres!

Eurgh, the other day some fools decided they would fold up everybodies wipers on the cars on my street. That wouldn't usually bother me as it's often pretty harmless but I now have a wiper problem. I was hoping they had just popped out one of the linkages but they have managed to break the alloy casting where the passenger side mounts up.

Nobody wants to sell a seperate one so far so I'm looking at £80+ secondhand minimum for a kit without a motor or £130+ new. Going to get my parents to post me my wiper arm removal tool and see if I can bodge something up using some washers and chemical metal for now, can't afford to be buying new bits right now :(

Is your neck still broken though?

I forgot to list this as a negative :(

The legal firm working for me as of yet have not been able to get in contact with the other parties insurers and until they do they are refusing to cover the costs of any physio. My back has got progressively worse and yesterday I went to a private physio to get things started. She assessed my movement and pain before leaving some sort of radio treatment thing on my back for 5 minutes and then taping up my back to hold me in a more upright position. I'm taped up until Monday night then have another physio session on Tuesday where she will start doing some work on me. Apparently I shouldn't have gone back to work full time after only taking 2 days off and I'm not allowed to do any sports. £50 yesterday and then £40 for each session after that so I really do hope I am able to claim the costs of treatment. I have also been referred via my GP for physio through the NHS but this is likely to be 2+ weeks wait so I needed to get things started.

The legal claim is also getting more interesting. The work site where the minibus pulled out from has now put up a load of 'Site Entrance' signs and traffic cones as well as a temporary traffic light system to stop traffic on the road when their vehicles need to exit or move between the site entrances. The question is why do it now after my accident (and apparently there was another accident there before mine!), they clearly have no idea about site management or safety so I plan to take them to the cleaners.

Back to the engine thing, what's wrong with a 2.0xe vauxhall engine? Lots of the kit car boys use them, they are quite easy to screw big numbers out of for not a lot of penny's. If it were me buying an engine to make rwd, it would be a naturally aspirated YB cosworth. On weber 48's and a 4 branch manifold. My old mans mate had one in a kit car, with the head skimmed to bring it back to a proper compression level,as opposed to low compression for the turbo. It sounded awesome, almost like a BDG. Couldn't remember what power it chucked out, but it was a tad thirsty

Hopefully that'll settle and lower a touch more. Are your wheels poking out a bit?

The wheels do sit out a bit, ive got a set to go on the front to match the back, however they dont fit due to the lip on the drive flange (i think there may be different drive flanges for the petrols and diesels)

The front has settled a bit, but the springs are only 30mm lowering, so i doubt they'll drop much more.

Looks much better at that height on the front. What's with the randomly front end and wheels?!

long story. multi colour front end was from a car accident, havnt got around to painting it.

I had a matching set of the ACS front wheels, however due to the offset, they rubbed badly on the back. So i got a set of 4 4spoke rims, got a them fitted to the back, and they dont fit the front due to the lip on the drive flange being bigger than the hole in the rims.

I could space them out to clear the drive flange, but they might stick out too far and i'd be in the same boat :(

Werd. Otherwise I'm fairly sure there was a 'sport' version of the AX at some point - could be worth checking out to see if you can get hold of those wheels cheap somewhere?

Currently eyeing up some coilovers for the Leon. Only for a bit of road use so looking at some £160 JOMs on eBay. These are pretty much what most of the 1.8t crew were running from what I can remember and should be fine for general road duty, right?

Just get a friendly engineering company to open out the center-bore a little so they fit properly. Or better yet, find a saxo/106 in a scrap yard and rob all the 4 stud bits and the wheels off it ;)

i did think of doing a 4 stud conversion a while back, but it means having to find a set of struts and beam axle, and a set of wheels and tyres :/

i thought of getting the drive flanges machined, would it effect the wheel balance? or is it a matter of it being so close to the center of rotation, a gram ot two imbalance wouldnt effect it?

Theres a GT and GTi, but they're both 4 stud. :(

Machining the drive flange would be fine, if it's done right it wouldn't effect the balance, but even if it did it wouldn't be noticeable, like you say, it's so close to the center it'd have little force on anything.

As for finding a set of struts a beam axle and wheels/tyres, these are parts off a 106/Saxo, just walk into pretty much any breakers/scrap yard in the country and they'll probably be overflowing with the things! (admittedly have the beams will be shagged, but there's bound to be some good ones around too.)

Just ordered a load of poly bushes for the Scirocco. It's a kit including basically everything other than the ARB's, but I'll probably only fit the front wishbone, rear beam and a couple of the engine mounts. I might try out the rear shock top mounts too as they're easy to put back if I don't like them. I also ordered a replacement drivers side engine mount too as mines a bit shagged. Engine mounts wide the ideas to leave the 2 that take the engines weight rubber, and fit poly versions to the ones that control its rotation, hopefully this'll keep the vibrations down while still giving good control. I may fill some of the voids in the rubber ones with polyurethane while they're out though. Can't wait to get them all fitted, I'm amazed I've waited this long to do it really, I expect the shell must be have covered around 170k by now (4th engine so far :$ ), so I'm expecting it to make a big difference.

It's funny how modern cars seem capable of actually killing their bushes as regular service parts, while with older stuff they just get a bit soggy but soldier on indefinitely.
