Chocolate gearboxes, the diff rivets shear and exit through the housing. I got a complete refurbed box and new clutch for 550 quid fitted with the proper studded diff. Other than that pretty bombproof, is it 8v or 16v? edit: I can highly recommend midland vw in cannock/norton canes for looking after all things vag. Jolfa
Chocolate gearboxes, the diff rivets shear and exit through the housing. The 020 (rod change) boxes are famous for it, the cable change boxes are less prone to it. I have got a small spline boss in my shed. I will dig it out and measure it. Mk3's have a small splined column with a larger adapter pressed on to the end. Early Mk3's didn't have the adapter. They introduced the big spline in late 1989, therefore all MK3's have the column adaptor. You can remove them though Stangely though, they didn't bother fitting it to Audi's, they stayed small spline for some years after.
Prawny Baby
Any chance of a link to the onbaord from the megane? There were one or two points in your clip where. Felt a fwd car would definitely be quicker, around the twisty bits, you seemed hampered y your power, then when you tried to power through it just got lairy. In a fwd, you'll struggle for traction just as much, but when you nail it, although it'll spin up it'll still be pulling in the right direction. Still thought the track section looked fantastic though. I swear at one point you went for the gear lever and it wasn't where you were expecting it to be due to flopping around
RobinJI
Yeah, that looks like a whole lot of fun. How stiff springs are you running? On a course like that I can see how a standard Megane RS could have an advantage suspension wise on the non-track bits, as yours looks like it's set-up quite stiff. As Nick says, the track section looks great, but I'd have thought the time you'd loose there because of a softer set-up would be more than made up for in the rougher bits. That does sound like a bit of a joke about the trophies. It seems only fair that you'd get at least something to show your success. There were one or two points in your clip where. That's definitely what we found on the Grass surface stuff I've been doing in the summers the last couple of years. The RWD cars are great fun and brilliant to watch, but they don't make progress as fast as the FWD unless they're driven super carefully to keep traction, when there's a lot less time lost from spinning up in the FWD stuff. There was a couple of mk2 escorts, nicely modified that were always beaten by a standard diesel Vectra estate haha.
TROYston
Drove it properly today and the clutch feels 'lumpy' like when you let off the clutch and push it down it feels as if it does it has stages or sticky.I don't belive its right. Anyone got any ideas on a fix?
Revolver
Maybe one/some of the bearings used to operate it are broken.

Still thought the track section looked fantastic though. I swear at one point you went for the gear lever and it wasn't where you were expecting it to be due to flopping around I agree, the reason I sometimes put too much power down is mostly because I enjoy fighting with the car but also to maintain at least some heat in the rear tyres. More clips of the Megane have surfaced, he's clearly a very skilled driver and definitely deserves 1st place but the driving looks so boring and the car has possibly the worst exhaust sound ever. So happy to be driving a RWD car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1E6m4l-Fv0 And the onboard you were asking about: Perhaps I was a bit dumb yesterday but it took me a while to figure out he wasn't using an "intelligent camera mount" but that the camera was mounted to his helmet. Yeah, that looks like a whole lot of fun. How stiff springs are you running? The suspension is the worst thing about this car (no, it's not the gear lever), it's a D2 Drift and like all Chinese products it doesn't stand abuse. So the damping is all messed up, the spring rates I don't know about but rears are super soft despite them being dedicated for an M3 and my car being a whole lot lighter than stock. Front springs are high end KW's, they seem ok. The blue M3 from the pic above runs AST 5 series coilovers, it's amazing how flat the car is through corners and how compliant the suspension is on rough bits. But that's an expensive kit, definitely on the to-do list along with a dogbox.

Pashley26
That Megane is not 320bhp. Guestimating the gearing times from the ones I've driven (I've driven lots of them) it is just a standard 250 with a 265 Trophy chip. Don't underestimate them, they can lap the ring quicker than Prawn ever did at 8:07 as a standard car out the factory. Can't grumble at that. Your car looks MUCH more fun, and I know which one I'd rather have.

Jolfa
Looks alright that, and you paid about going rate for it, and I will almost guarantee a new clutch cable will make it feel 100x better The Vento front's a must, surely? Came on coilovers which was a bonus, save me faffing around buying them. It is yes! but need to buy a vento hood and the dick cut the grill i think, but there rather cheap. Being a complete noob with cars, how difficult is it to fit a new clutch cable? And i imagine i should grease it right?

Don't really need to grease, not really much of it you can grease anyway comes with a fitted outer cable, make sure you get a manual adjust one though, the auto adjust ones just go wrong! Literally a hook on the pedal and a clip on the gearbox end, 10 mins, even my mechanically inept mate managed to do it with no help, he even struggles to put fuel in the car half the time! Greetings
Anyone else think the Megane driver looked like Schumacher? f**k me, that's who he reminded me of. Jardo, I was surprised at the power output too considering how much slower the car was in a straight line, then assumed it must be due to the weight difference and gearing. People attending these kinds of events aren't the one to lie about power output, if they do, they usually go the other way. But I agree something doesn't add up here. Either way, seems like the car handles brilliantly. All the more impressive when you consider it has AC, satnav and seating for four.
Prawny Baby
You're right you know alex. That megane does sound awful, and doesn't look anywhere near as fun as yours, although is undeniably quick. I'd say it looks quicker than a stock 250 though, and sounds more raucous too. Probably just got a centre box delete and a decent map on it or similar. Who knows.

Jolfa
Vento? Is that the cool way of saying Jetta? Depends, are you American? Because that's the only place the MK3 saloon was ever called a Jetta

Jolfa
In europe MK3 was Vento, MK4 was Bora, the 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 are all Jettas wherever they're from
RobinJI
I guess so. Mk1/2 saloons were called jetta's, mk3 vento and mk4 bora. Think they were all called Jetta's in the states, and I think the estate's might be called a jetta over there too, not sure on that though? I think Mk5/6 estates are also called a Jetta just to confuse things!
