TPS and throttle alignment are self calibrating on ME3.8 mate, when you turn the ignition on you should hear it whine for about 30 seconds. later cars need an alignment doing, but these don't.

Wouldn't hurt to whip the TB off and give it a really good clean out though, and perhaps try some isopropanol spray on the MAF element.

really can't wait to see what it's like though, is it as loud as you first thought? or has it settled down now?

Robin - sounds like you need to do a throttle body alignment. Did you manage to get the OBD port wires up? If not, turn the ignition on, and leave it on (without cranking), and wait for the faint whining noise from the throttle body to stop. Its not perfect doing it this way, but seeing as your's is "dumb" compared to newer engines (BAM, AMK, AUM etc), it might be enough without needing vagcom. You'll probably find you get a bit more power too; the battery died on my LCR, and before doing the TBA, it was totally flat to drive, really surprising what a difference it makes!

Revolver - like I said..."most", not all :P I presume its a safety feature.

EDIT: Nick beat me to it :(

Cheers guys, they've got gallons of isopropanol at the workshop (literally) so I'll give the MAF a clean up with is sometime. I've got a spare MAF and throttle body that I can clean off the car and then fit to see if it makes a difference. It's been started and left idling for a while quite a few times, so I'd guess it should be calibrated about right. I know the noise you mean, typical PWM wine.

Nick, it's loud, but not stupidly so. It does resonate a bit as you'd expect with a single box system, so in terms of cruising it's by far loudest at ~50, which is good for me as there's not may 50 limits local to me. It's pretty sedate on the motorway and around town, you can hear the exhaust but it's still very much a background noise, can hold a conversation or listen to music no problem. You can happily use 5th when around town which keeps the noise right down, the joys of a light car I guess! Steady cruising at 70 reads about 13-15 in/Hg, which sounds pretty good to me, should give decent economy on a run. (I still want to sort front and rear under-trays sometime though.)

Ah right, thanks, I'll give it a go although the amount of messing around I've done with it I'd expect it to have been left for that sort of time with the ignition on, still worth a shot though.

I've not got an OBD port wired in yet, simply because I've not got an OBD port, it's one thing I didn't have lying around or get with the engine, I know where/how to wire it in so I just need to make a trip to a scrap-yard with some side-cutters sometime. I'm a bit confused that these clocks don't seem to have an engine management light, not the traditional/universal symbol anyway. The first set I fitted did, but these don't.

Oh yeah, while I was at a Retro Rides event over the weekend there was a photographer there for Retro Car Magazine (Bryn Musselwhite if anyone knows/has heard of him, does a fair bit for speedhunters) doing a shoot about the event and he grabbed a few pictures of the Scirocco's engine/dash so I'll be keeping an eye out for the feature. I'll stick a few scans up if it makes it in but there was plenty of other interesting stuff there to beat it to the pages.

Are you braking while you're doing this? A lot of modern cars won't let you brake and accelerate at the same time.

Plus...rev matching a diesel is silly :P How can it possibly be dangerous?!

Nope i'm not breaking whilst doing it.

I'm not rev matching to be in the "power zone" haha, more to be in the right revs at the right gear. Coming up to a roundabout and you want to be in second gear as the car will be going too fast for first and second requires revs before you put it in or it will run away if you get me? Awful at explaining these things haha

I do that, when you get it right it feels good.

What do you mean by quite dangerous?

Because I can't pull away from a junction in good time, especially if a car is coming as the car doesn't have enough revs to pull away in the gear that i've selected (if that makes sense?)

I think the work Transit Connect does something similar to this. Sometimes if you are rolling in neutral and press the accelerator nothing happens, it doesn't rev. Mind you, it could just be f**ked. The 70mph limiter doesn't do the engine management much good I don't think.

Yeah mine does that in neutral too. Not a problem in neutral but it's so really frustrating when you're driving. It sounds like such a stupid insignificant problem but it's horrendous for traffic driving when you need to clutch control on the motorway and the car cuts the fuel when you go over a certain speed.

It never used to do this btw, need it fixing asap!

Quick look shows 1460kg so at 318 bhp your looking at 217bhp / ton,,, i think. Which doesnt sound fast lol.

I'd round that up to 218 if I were you

It's amazing what a few bhp one way and a few Kg the other way do for power:weight ratio, mine's only got a bit more power, and only a bit less weight, but power:weight is almost 100bhp more :S

Still, until the sun comes back out in March you'd probably still give me a good thrashing :(

to be honest i thought they were lighter than that, pulls very strong through the gears combined with the very short ratio box, it is swift!

What power and weight is yours now?

I bet that still goes bloody well! I went out in a 330bhp buy-eye and it was pretty epic!

The A3 is at 353bhp and 1133kg these days, still more weight to be removed easily, but I like things like my stereo and electric windows so they won't be going anywhere! Puts it in at 312bhp/ton

I'd cry if I knew the power to weight ratio of my 90bhp diesel :D

it's about 65-70bhp / ton, but you'll be the one laughing all the way to the petrol station! (or should that be fuel station?)

Power to weight is epic.

I class anything which is 200/ton+ as a quick car. :)

Scoob looks really good, a friend of mine owns this and I've driven it a couple of times -

It's got the Prodrive performance pack, Walbro pump, 3" downpipe and decat, mongoose cat back, Exeddy clutch, HKS induction kit and super BOV as well as some other bits. It's about 330bhp on a local Subaru specialists RR.

Boring. As. f**k.

But only because it is ruthlessly efficient, the way it dispatches B roads is unholy. It just seems too good, perfect family wagon with proper power.

Went to look at a 1.4 6n2 polo tonight, mechanically it is absolutely mint. It doesn't really need anything at all. It's pretty darn cheap too, I reckon I can get it for £650. Has receipts for gearbox, and timing belt changes. Only downside is that it has been rattle canned matte black but it isn't too bad and it is only going to be my cheap daily so I think I'm going to have it. Will put a honeycombe grill on, maybe some steelies or cheap alloys and just run it. Then I can go mad tuning the mini :D Likelyhood is i will come back tomorrow posting pictures of my newly aquired polo.
