Because?

The owner of SCN is the most hateful. thoroughbred fanny you will ever meet.

It's a long story which goes back over years, I was recently banned for celebrating Niki from R Tech. He regularly closes topics about companies, gives bad reviews of them, slanders individuals and all for his own personal gain.

Try and put "R Tech" into a post, or "Niki Gower" and you'll see it is starred out. If you bypass the swear filter by saying N-I-k-I-R-T-E-C-H you will get a very abusive message from Mark and a suspension from the forum.

He's a horrible piece of work.

I'm still after a winter wagon. Ive got 2-3k to spend. I want something basically for going to work and back in (the mini is the weekend fun).

Needs to be something fairly powerful im 27 with 5 years NCB so insurance isnt as much of an issue.

I was looking at a Mk4 Golf Tdi 130 but can't find any decent ones in my area (without them being 150k+)

Any other suggestions? I don't want something massive but i don't want a baked bean can either.

I've been hunting for a replacement car too, can't seem to find anything I like :( Mainly because I have to comprimise and get a hatch (I'm a saloon/estate person), as me and my girlfriend are looking at buying the car together and she dislikes driving a saloon. The only thing that ticks most boxes is an Audi A3 (06-08 sort of age)... and I really dont want one of them because it means getting a dull as chuff low mileage standard one/still dull as chuff high mileage s line with the potential budget. Quite tempted to just settle for a cheaper car that's just mine, fancy a retro these days....

How many miles do you do a year Danny?

I know so many people who are out of touch with running costs, unless you do 10+k a year chances are that a petrol will be economical enough.

My 1.8t averages 33.7mpg, and that's stop start traffic on the way to work with it not getting up to temp for more than 2 miles. On longer runs I have seen as much as 55MPG over 120 mile average at 64mph average speed. However usually I see mid to high 40's on a long run.

If you like the Mk4 platform I would strongly suggest looking at a 1.8t, unless you do high mileage of above 10K a year.

I have a weird problem with the Focus. 1.8 TDCi mk1.

Basically, it won't let me "rev match" when the car is moving over around 5 mph.

Say i'm coming up to a junction and want to go into 2nd gear, I will press the clutch and press the accelerator to keep the revs up however it won't do anything if i blip the throttle, however it freely does this if I am setting off and the car is stationary.

It's such a pain, will it be some kind of speed sensor that is faulty? Please please help as it's quite dangerous now and again.

Are you braking while you're doing this? A lot of modern cars won't let you brake and accelerate at the same time.

Plus...rev matching a diesel is silly :P How can it possibly be dangerous?!

Put your saleman hat on and tell me why i should get a leon?

Put simply, they're amazing.

Take anything that has a 1.8T fitted, choose your preferred body shape, be it Leon, A3, Octavia, Golf, Bora, then go forth and enjoy one of the finest engines of our generation.

40mpg on a run, 30-32 around town typically, 150bhp stock in the A3 and golf, 180bhp stock in the Leon and octavia, 210bhp for both after a £250 remap, far smoother and more refined than any soot chucker, stupidly cheap to buy now, £1500 will see you a good example of any of the above, cheap to insure, better second hand parts availability than just about anything on the road, as there's such a broad range of vehicles to take parts from due to chassis sharing across the group.

Massive enthusiast base, huge amount of technical knowledge available on-line, constant on going development from tuners mean things are always up to date.

I really do think that the 20vt in whatever form is the mk2 golf of the current generation, they're at that perfect age where they're modern enough to be fast, reliable, comfy, and smart, yet old enough to have a huge following and parts availability, and be stupidly cheap to buy, tune and run.

I have shiney new adjustable top mounts :)

What sort of mileage is high for one? And when do things like turbos start to go?

There isn't really a "high mileage" limit. 100k is just bedded in really. As long as they have been serviced correctly (NOT longlife...avoid them ones!), and the correct oil used, and cambelt done every 60k, they are sweet for a LONG time!

Turbo wise, could be anything really, depends how its driven, and if its been warmed up/cooled down correctly. At a guess, I'd say 150k was a good life.

Alex - yeah it is. Most drive-by-wire engines have a bit of a spaz fit if you try and left foot brake!

Top mounts look good Nick. I've been thinking about solid top-mounts for the Scirocco. The MOT place used one of the automated test bays that yank the wheel around to check for play and it was interesting to see how much flex there is in everything with it all rubber-mounted. Now the engine's in handling's going to be my main concern with the Scirocco, so I want to start doing some interesting stuff with the suspension, but first port of call's to get these god awful wheels and tyres off there, so I need to get my new ones down from North Wales somehow!

The Scirocco's been on the road and working flawlessly since Friday now. There's a little hesitation in the mid revs and it's idling well but not perfectly (doesn't quite 'catch' the revs if you let off sudently, it'll drop down to ~600rpm before reacting and bouncing back up to a steady ~900rpm idle), so I think there's a sensor issue there somewhere, which is kind of expected with an engine that's been knocking around outside a car for a while. Any ideas 1.8t guys? My first guess would be the MAF being gummed up/dead, or maybe the TPS being out of calibration? (It's running Bosch Motronic 3.8 management/sensors.) There's still a few bits and pieces to tinker with but on the whole it's been great besides the bent/zero grip wheels. Sounds lovely and pulls very well, going back to a petrol's taking some getting used to though, I keep forgetting to use the full rev range!
