The Car Thread

Car all ready for a rallysprint comp tomorrow. 280 teams = going to be boring as f**k, mostly waiting in line for your run. But with over 40 cars in my class, and some really good drivers, it will give me a good idea of where I and this car stand. Deffo not going to have a podium finish unless I have a lot of luck.

And it's very colourful outside so my dad took my car and took some pics alongside his.

Trials Forum does make me laugh, they stopped making the MG A in 1962! That's a twin cam anyway, so it has to be 1958-1960

And George, you know that's blates 280bhp! Good old AMD. Which would make your Leon the same power to weight as my old A3, I can't see how it can be so much better. Fair enough I can't argue with the area under the graph further up the rev range; but it's not the night and day comparison people are making it out to be.

Did you not see the quotation marks around his figures? :P

Yeah of cause I did, even you should know about AMD's rollers by now midget boy. Any news with the Leon? Coming down to Plymouth for a weekend of tarting it up?

Have you ordered your Relentless manifold yet? Did you get a new one? Seen the K03 manifold they're designing, it's siiick.

from a driving point of view, a 280bhp ko4'd leon absolutely obliterates a 240bhp lighter a3 I'm afraid jardo, but you just don't seem to understand.

the a3 is a big bang and it's all over, no revs to play with, and when you do let it rev out it's slow as.

it's not an enjoyable or involving drive like something with a decent pull right to the top end.

Having had years with a st2 ko3S making very good figures, and now going to a conservative ko4 hybrid that's making lower figures than a normal ko4 can, it's worlds apart. Going in a st2 LCR making 280-285bhp it's just in a different league to the ko3S.

Sure, side by side up to 80/90mph there probably wouldn't be a huge difference, but in terms of driving pleasure, and certainly at higher speeds, the ko4 walks all over it.

News with the Leon...

50% of the doors are re-sealed and no longer appear to be leaking, all this rain we have been having is giving the new seals a good test but has also meant I have not been able to do the other doors. At least the doors I have re-sealed were the ones that were leaking into the car so the most important ones are done.

I'm now used to the standard car and am almost bored of it, I'm starting to understand why you guys end up doing mod after mod :P

You're wrong foo. I understand perfectly, I just don't agree at all.

Driving pleasure is a subjective view; your opinion on what makes an awesome driving car isn't fact.

I like stupid things not sensible and efficient things. So I'll never say a huge table top of power is good because it's not what I want. Not until it's like 400bhp and enough to obliterate pretty much everything anyway.

Which is why when I got in your car with the hybrid I was like "dude...it doesn't feel anywhere near as quick as I expected?" and you KNEW that was what I was going to say. I just don't like it, because I'm a child. If I could have 240bhp for two seconds or 220bhp EVERYWHERE you know which one I'd pick.

Why don't you get it mapped then Tic? Just throw a generic stage 1 map on it, I think Revo have got a good offer on at the moment.

Remember when you drove my car without asking me? It'll be nothing like that so don't get your hopes too high, but it'll be awesome all the same :) Come down to me for a weekend and lets properly pimp it up, it'll cost you less than a tank of petrol and it'll be fun. I might let you play with Lou's boobs again.

OK, so maybe it's down to personal preference, but the type of driving enjoyment I describe is the generally accepted view, if it wern't, most petrol heads would infact be driving soot chuckers, because you can have all the torque in the world over a useless power band.

but still, this is a subject in which I have much experience, and you have none, so lets just agree that I'm right as far as the masses are concerned, and you're wierd.

I'd be careful what you say if I were you chap, the internet is still a public place!

Pfft, nothing I wouldn't say to Lou anyway. If she's sad enough to troll through the internet trying to keep tabs on what I say then more fool her. Anyway you forget, it was her who put her boobs on Tic's head. She's bought this ridicule upon herself.

Can you believe that was a year ago, this year has flown by. I dunno if I can be arsed to go to Barney this year, are you going?

Not a twin cam, those things are rare as f**k. It's a normal OHV, MK2 chassis. I think it's a '62 model. The engine is re-bored and had quite a lot of work put into it so the little thing pushes out well over 100whp per tonne. Actually the whole car has been modified in various ways, my dad bought it over 45 years ago and he's been using it on a daily basis since.

Jardo, my Leon is worlds apart from your old a3. TOTALLY different power delivery.

I know its not a "real" 300bhp, but that's what it says on the paper, so that's what I say it is (going by Prawn's theory :P). My car was remapped there after they supposedly had the rollers recalibrated, so their figures are more believable now it seems (although I do know 300bhp isn't really achievable without wmi).

My Leon may only have 80bhp more than the a3 (basing the ko3 on the a3 being maxed out at 200bhp, and the Leon being 280bhp), but considering the a3 was considerably lighter (sub 1100kg by the time I'd done all the work), it is MUCH slower than the a3.

We're talking WORLD'S APART here (why do you think I got rid of the a3 so quick after getting the Leon after all the work I had put into it?!). For what it was, the a3 was pretty quick, but it ran out of puff too soon, the ko4 just pulls and pulls all the way.

Your a3 was quick, but it will never compare to if it was ko4'd.

Strange, looks like it's got the twin cam badges behind the vents and I thought I could see 4 wheel disc brakes in the pictures. Has your dad put discs on the back? Looks like he's done quite a lot to it from the pictures, hence the confusion over it being a twin cam. Meh, my bad.

Your dad might like what my old man is building, he's been working on an MG Magnette for the last 4 years that he's totally restoring and doing all the bodywork himself. Underneath it has got full ex works MGA suspension with a shortened Ford atlas LSD axle, and the engine is a supercharged B series with a lairy cam, bored out to 1.9 and a load of head work done. From the outside it just looks like a standard MG Magnette that's been lowered and had a set of steels put on it. I can't wait for him to get it back together and running again.

Either way, I like the MGA a lot.

I'm fed up arguing with you over this George lol, it's all personal preference and I don't agree with you or Prawn.

In the time it's taken me to reply the postman has delivered the new boost gauge I ordered, so I went out and fitted it and went for a spin. I put my foot down and it's all lairy and the wheels spin up immediately and I think "wow this things so fasssssst!" but I can never actually do any damage because I can't go quick enough due to awesome wheel spin and how much of a girl pants I am.

If I had a K04 and loads of power up top I'd have exactly the same feeling, but I'd be going much much faster and putting myself in much more danger.

How can you not agree that for me, a K03s is perfect.

The postman also had my Milltek pipe :)

Where can I get the mega awesome clamps that Milltek send out? They've got no branding on them, but they weigh a ton and look fricking awesome.

New boost gauge is so much better than the last one I purchased...
