Not really mate, they can be so bad it's either a specialist job to have them removed with a hydraulic puller, ream them out or worst case head off. It started from cold nearly instantly, so these things so far all seem to point towards it being fine currently. Hopefully a dose of Forte every so often will keep the injectors happy... Passed my MOT course, sold a cylinder head, sold the cam cover, sold my old Recaros... all looking good. Chappy paid more money for me to deliver said Recaros to Crewe, about 100 miles. Drop Recaros, turn round, f**k off home. Sound. Nope. The peugeot does smoke on full boot but when it continued to emit white steam when not on the pedal it worried me... 3 miles out of Crewe. Just as the needle shot up to max temp the entire contents of the engines cooling system spaffed itself up the windscreen. Que hours of trying to find someone with some f**king pliers and a Stanley knife so I could chop the offending hose and refit. I got the van in the end, all seemed ok for the price and I'm willing to risk it on the potential injectors/gearbox issues, it runs nicely and changes gear well currently. Frustratingly on the way home the battery light came on, the alternator isn't charging. I found some jump leads in the front and noticed he had an extension lead out in the garden but thought nothing of it at the time, arse. Fortunately the spares van arrives tonight (complete with refurbished gearbox) and I'll salvage the alternator off that (assuming it works!) and get the current one refurbished as those freewheel pulleys worry me. Apart from that issue and being totally filthy and faded it seems in good fettle! I lightly went over with some T cut to remove some of the really faded sections, this has worked very well considering how little effort was put in, I'll do a proper polish in the near future and get the bumper trims treated as well as the wheels painted. It is a work van so needs to be presentable but not mega flashy like some of the van owners seem to go for. I've ordered some bits and bobs and I'll give it a service shortly just to ensure everything is good. Is there anything I should be looking at doing as preventative maintenance that is typical with these? Is it worth me changing the gearbox oil to aid the weak box lasting a bit longer? Tom Booth Posted July 21, 2017 Report Share Posted July 21, 2017 Yank tank went up on a friend's 4 post a few nights ago, very impressed with it underneath absolutely no rot on the underside. Some surface rust that'll come up good with a few hours and a wire wheel but other then that great. Seems like it's had a full service a few years ago with new ball joints, shocks and wheel bearings which is nice. Needs a new universal joint on the back of the prop but local motor factors actually stocked one so fitting that tonight. 3 inch lowering block and air Can't wait for winter to strip the back end down and get everything painted up and rebuilt. dann2707 Posted July 21, 2017 Report Share Posted July 21, 2017 I've finished my tantrum with the car. Going to get the gearbox rebuilt with a quaife diff. But I have said that it'll be next year. Going to take the car off the road this year as I can't justify spending anymore money on it this year. £774 for the diff and £200 for fitting, or around that. It has the hole in the bottom of the wing, both backs of the arch and that's it really. All chassis rails and floors are totally solid. The roofs been painted before and the o/s wing but other then that it's mostly original paint which is amazing. Going to try and blow bits in as best as possible to keep as much original as I can. CurtisRider Posted July 23, 2017 Report Share Posted July 23, 2017 Did some actual spannering yesterday, I haven't done any car repairs in a while (I guess that is only a good thing!) I had a spares van delivered, engine is seized but there are plenty of useful bits with it (like a refurbished gearbox used for a few months). Hopefully I can make mine look a little bit better too as this is in better condition aesthetically. First job was to strip the front ends off This was so I could get to the alternators, you can do it from underneath but I wanted to check out the condition behind there anyway and bumper removal is a 10 minute job (probably less next time as I wont be hunting for bolts) The white van had a refurbished unit fitted, no idea on age but it works. I'll get the red ones duff unit refurbished and fitted for peace of mind as I know pulley failures can lead to unhappy times with the cam belt, at least for now my battery is charging and I can get around without having to charge my battery wherever possible and having a second battery just in case! Oh and a generator incase I needed to do an emergency charge, over worrying much? I then replaced the cambelt cover as it had been torn in order to fit a new belt, lazy sods! It was catching on the belt and I feared it would get sucked into the spinny stuff and cause engine death. Nice easy job, just whip the engine mount off and away you go. I gave it a good clean whilst I was there, so now it's not totally caked in oil (rocker cover gasket was leaking but has been replaced). The handbrake cable snapped at the front when I was parking, unfortunately the only cable I could get was a revised one that included the intermediate section (revised version apparently). This meant dropping the tank at one side, again a surprisingly simple job. So far I'm amazed how simple this van is to work on, it drives well for a giant tin box and even though it's dog slow it's also quite nice to not always feel in the rush like the Porsche makes me feel. SamKidney Posted July 24, 2017 Report Share Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) The changes to the Civic have been a resounding success. The way it pulls itself through a turn now is incredible! Diff and roll bar and a little more toe out with some more negative camber dialled in has got it driving like it's on rails. It's keen to oversteer if you get it wrong but it's so predictable it makes it fun! Pads and fluid held up perfectly for a solid 30 minutes of kicking its head in round Rockingham on Sunday and showed no signs of giving in, if anything the more heat went into the pads the more bite they had. Its also quite amazing what a positive psychological difference a good seat and harness make, not moving around in the seat and being able to feel the cars ever movement has also made a pleasant change to how I drive it. Never even tried the R888 as the Yokohama AD08Rs were so good! Night and day difference, seemed happy at around 29psi hot all round. Police man was fuming halfway through writing his ticket when the bloke the other end of his walkey talkey confirmed that vehicles 1965 and before are exempt from separate light testing rules Had a good evening on the car anyway. I thought I'll crack some jobs off. Started to replace the boot lock that had been drilled out for some reason, not knowing I need a 27mm box spanner to remove the old barrel, so that job was thwarted. Thought I'd replace the bulbs in the instrument cluster as non work and night driving is, interesting... Someone's scotch blocked onto the back of the wiring harness so tightly that you can't get the cluster out and I gave that up for a job when I have more time. I'm no welder But it's solid and dressed back well. There was nothing underneath amazingly so I just wire wheeled the inner sill and slapped some chassis black in there. I'll wax oil the inside tomorow when the paints dried and give it a quick mop over to hide the blend. Pleased for a 3hour job though !
