dann2707
@JolfaI could get my hair cut by my mum. It has been done but it would be f**king terrible. The Timing pulleys are not on a keyway and most garages have the cheap tools or no tools at all. The cheap tools bend when tightening up and throws your timing out. I know youre going to argue so it's pretty pointless me even replying.
forteh
My old 1.25 Zetec fiesta had keyless cam pulleys, changed the belt without the Ford tools no problem, well apart from forgetting to torque up the crank pulley 3 pistons dented, 5 valves decapitated and 9 valves bent! SamKidney
I invested in a good tool when I found out the job was coming in. Pretty comprehensive and can be used on the lesser Renault engines too so its earned its worth! My new front wings should be here tomorrow, still need to source a door. Arch repair panels have been ordered and once done it can do down for paint anytime. Shame its happened now as I wanted to head to Rockingham next weekend for Honda Day and I dont fancy taking a battered car, and it definitely wont be done before then
Luke Rainbird
In related news: finally got around to timing up mine today. Need to get the adapter made up for the turbo asap to allow me to work out a few lines and get the DP/charge pipe/intake sorted. I'd like to get it in the car at some point really - it's already been sat in various states of disrepair for too long!
MadManMike
Using this car as a weekend toy makes me appreciate it so much more. Going for a Sunday blast on some of the dual carriageways around Bristol is so much fun
Pashley26
A bit late here I know but... Avoid Techniclutch like the plague. They have absolutely no clue at all about the products they sell, which are usually remanufactured. When you're replacing a clutch it's not really something you want to stop and start on; because once you've ripped it all apart you have no option but to put it back together or leave it in pieces taking up space until you get the parts you need. Techniclutch had me waiting two weeks for a refund because they sent me a 2WD friction and pressure plate with a 4WD flywheel. And they couldn't see how that was their fault, and told me that I just didn't understand what I had bought. Nah. All hell broke loose, I had to borrow money to buy the right parts (CG, they were AMAZING) and when it all went back together it was beautiful. When my Subaru needs a clutch I'll be getting one from CG again - http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw5Ie8BRCJ9fHlr_bH24cBEiQAkoDQcQbH8w_tW_N6dvThPNGqZOywYZSRf7lZ2SHU3ts98REaAg_48P8HAQ - Would you f**king believe it. Subaru hasn't broken down for two weeks! Two f**king weeks!!!!! Before. After. The bridging wire from the clock spring to the airbag was missing, one's in the post...So I have an airbag light on. I changed the rear diff carrier for a solid mounted one. This has made it feel much more nice. I have no pictures, but you can have a video that show it doesn't clunk when you change gear at high load. I snow foamed it. I love my hand held snow foam gun (LOLS WILLY JOKES). Then I waxed it with Cherry Glaze. Then I drove it home. Now I'm going to buy some new discs and pads for it and a set of -45mm springs and some spacers. Then I'm going to leave it alone.

If your mum was a hairdresser but just didn't specialise in styled men's fashion hair, but got it right regardless, what's the issue? Would you go and get it cut at a barbers to get it even righter or would that be a waste of money? It's a toothed belt regardless, it's either a tooth (per pulley) out, or it's not, and if it's been done, and it's running fine, then it's not Edited July 10, 2016 by Jolfa
Luke Rainbird
Dann - those 225 engines run around 300bhp with a hybrid IIRC, right?

You can have it appear fine and the slack be taken up by the tensioner and appear right. I'm talking a few minutes out when tightening both pulleys and it throwing the timing out. You're right in what you're saying about the toothed belt *if the pulleys were on a keyway* but they're not. They have to be lined up absolutely spot on prior to fitting the belt. Which is what most garages don't get. And they use tippex etc.
Jolfa
I don't understand what you mean by on a keyway? In cambelt news mine managed to slip a tooth again somehow, this made itself abundantly clear half way up The Remarkables when it was struggling like a bitch even in first and the exhaust got so hot it melted one of the gear linkage bushes Oops! Luke Rainbird
I think Dan means that by having no key the pulleys can easily be fitted with slight rotational misalignment, so actually rather than being it by discrete amounts (a tooth or so) it'd be possible to be out by any given amount (1°, 3.864° etc). The decent tools will hold things in the correct place better and reduce this risk.
CurtisRider
Forgive my ignorance...why does the pulley need to come off in the first place?

The dephaser is apart of this pulley. This controls the VVT and is replaced during this stage usually. I think it has to come off for another reason too though, maybe something is constrained for access to it.
Jolfa
I see. Still though, if it's done and it's right, why do it again? If timing is out, it's pretty bloody obvious, it'd feel like shit Edited July 11, 2016 by Jolfa
Danny
And if its been done wrong, and theres no keyway etc etc, how does someone who knows what they are doing correct lt? Dial gauges and measuring?

MadManMike
Mark - it was down to time constraints that I didn't go further afield. Just a quick blast after the Queen Square meet in the morning. Would be cool to have a little meet up at some point, you can show me some decent roads in Wales

They idle lumpy as f**k standard so it's hard to tell but if it's done badly you're 20-30bhp down.
Danny
Stick it on a RR. Surely thats cheaper than getting them redone?
