Long one from me so i'm spoiler tagging it. Injector cleaning!

Okay so this update can either be seen as ghetto as f**k or awesome. You can all decide haha.
But basically, I wanted to clean out my injectors properly! The redex crap is exactly that and I think the only way to clean them properly is to leave them in an ultrasonic bath.
I researched into it whilst on my lunch breaks at work and saw that simply leaving them in an ultrasonic bath wouldn't do that much in comparison to with them being pulsed like they would be in a real life situation. So I had a search, and bought an ultra sonic cleaning bath!

It had loads of great reviews online so went for that one.
I had a spare injector from when I replaced mine a month ago as it was giving me hassle.

I then bought a petrol injector pulser.

However this gave me a bit of a problem (known to me already). It only worked on the car battery as in 12v, which wasn't ideal as everytime i'd want to do this i'd have to be in stupidly close proximity to my battery in the freezing cold = not comfortable at all.

So a bit of googling returned results that I could actually use a spare computer PSU to get a 12V feed by simply crimping the yellow wires together.

So I did just that, crimping the blacks together for the earth and the yellows for the 12V. I can actually use the reds for another feed, think it might be 5v or something :)

I can then (crudely) hook up the injector tester to my PSU and voila, it powers up. I do intend on making it more secure in the future as now it is simply crocodile clipped onto the wires of the PSU as shown.

I then needed to test the injector using the pulser however I obviously need to get some pressure behind the injector. This was really just to see how it was looking prior to cleaning. As said, it was giving me some issues that's why I changed it. I then found some pipe that it would fit into snugly!

I then hooked up a squeezy bottle to the other end, again this was air tight so my intentions were to fill the pipe with fluid through the blue bit and screw the bottle on and then squeeze that to apply pressure to the injector.

I then hooked up the terminals to the injector

15350450191_e92c19382c_b.jpgDSCN2675 by dann2707, on Flickr
And now I can squeeze the bottle whilst pulsing the injector.

When doing this test I noticed that the injector only appeared to be spraying out of two parts and hitting the glass in two clear parts, much like a car windscreen washer. I couldn't get a picture of this as I don't have three hands.
I then filled the bath with near boiling water and all purpose cleaner (actually got some proper cleaner waiting for me to collect at work)

15353628825_7e232025fe_b.jpgDSCN2680 by dann2707, on Flickr
I then turned the pulser to constantly pulse and turned the bath on for 480 seconds.

I could see the dirt coming off, not as much as what I expected however.
Hooking up the injector back to my homebrew pressure tester lead to some interesting results. I thought I had completely broken it as it wasn't spraying any fluid...
or what I thought anyway, I just couldn't see anything?? So I got my torch shining on the injector and it turned out it was actually spraying but instead of clear droplets that I could see before it was more of a mist and that's why I couldn't see it! I also noticed that instead of it spraying out of two nozzles like before it was actually spraying out of all 4 of the micro holes in the end.
This is proven that it worked as the injector should ideally be spraying in a mist rather than like a hose pipe like it was before!
Glad my little ghetto testing and cleaning rig worked :) Going to be doing my actual ones at the weekend with the proper cleaning fluid.
Thanks for reading, it's been a long one haha

Going to a sprint on sunday (28th). thought i'd voluntarily drum up some support for it as the venue hasn't hosted an event since the late 60's and thought since a fair few of you are up this way it may be worth spreading the message. Since it's not just a car thing I wrote about it more in the MB thread (near the bottom of the page)

If you prefer here's the FB and site page

Lower level motorsport like this needs to exist and at the moment round here it's not doing too well, so I'm sure your support would be appreiciated!

cheers

Ciaran.

Looking for a bit of advice really.

I'm looking at buying a used car. I want nothing older than a 2011 reg. Options are Mercedes Benz C200 cdi or a BMW 318c /320d.

Both seem to be really nice cars but I'm stuck between the two. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated from someone who's owned either of the cars.

Cheers.

I do but it's also knackered  It only controls the idle speed though from memory, it will idle high or 'hunt' if that part is broken, and shouldn't be related to your fuel economy etc.

Ah damn. Yeah it idles high at the moment and occasionally fluctuates a little.

I need to do the charcoal canister delete as I think it's one of those pipes that's leaking a little.

Not sure what is causing the crap fuel economy - running out of things to check!

What sort of mpg are you getting? Does it do many short runs?

What have you checked so far?

Could try adjusting the idle screw, covered by a black bung on the throttle body. Flat bladed screwdriver. Again won't help economy but nice to have the idle where it should be if you can do it with just a simple adjustment.

Not sure on exact MPG, but I've worked out that a full tank gets me about 160 miles. My commute is 10 miles each way, in fairness there's a lot of gear changes and slow sections.

Checked diagnostics and it's only this valve at fault, so the temp sensor etc is not the problem.

I've changed the air filter yesterday, I still have new plugs, oil filter, oil and fuel filter to do.

I think there must be a leak somewhere, possibly at the injectors or fuel rail?

Guys I need some advice.

My MK1 Caddy has been listed for sale, £1750. I want £1500 for it but you can only go down right.

A chap near me has offered his Audi S3, reason being he wants something older and slower... Which doesn't make sense to me- but oh well.

Here's the advert he linked me, first impressions- ragged, boy racered, high milage, problematic. The idea was to swap then sell it, but I feel like it's gonna be ridden with way more problems than the caddy which is mainly a cause of bodywork.

http://www.swapz.co.uk/swapz/4853146/Audi_S3/

Piece of shit. Avoid like the plague.

No tax, no MOT, dubious advert, maxpower mods. f**k that.

If you're convinced it's a fuel leak, stick some UV dye in the fuel.

How far are you letting the fuel run down before a fill-up? The Empty means you have about 10L left, giving ~35L per fill, therefore 20mpg, which is a bit low. I'd expect more like 25mpg (non-interference engine that runs very rich!). Get the service done and see what it's like after that...

Not sure if you edited or I scrolled fast... my calculations are rough, but I never let the tank go less than 1/4. I'm doing a 500 mile round trip this weekend so I'll work it out properly.

Ah, you'll have 15L in the tank at 1/4 full. 24mpg sounds about right, service should bring it up a touch... check tyre pressures too.

Missus was sat on the passenger seat until she threw up 5 times during one run, thankfully with her mouth closed. Regardless, she got a trophy as a co driver

How has everyone overlooked the fact that Inur has finally posted a pic of his missus? :P

That's great stuff though dude.

I've got some fun news about my Landy, finally found out it's original registration and it turns out it's not on anything... Not been transferred off, just got lost over time.

LFO 822 could be MXL 654 by the end of the year, awesome.
