AdamR28
Sounds like a load of bollocks to me. Just get the car fully up to temperature then give it a good ragging (high rpm and high throttle openings) for about 10-15 minutes, that's the best way to clean off cruddy deposits from the whole system. Ross McArthur
Yea, Ive heard of that before. Wee old grannies cars which are only used to run down to the shops now and then having carbon build up which need a good ragging now and then but trust me, I do a lot of miles and do rev the old dear a good bit. So I think if it was to blow out and clean its self, it would have done it by now...
AdamR28
Cool - if you're confident your driving has kept everything running well, then it definitely doesn't need a Terra Clean...
Ross McArthur
Well, theres still a cu nt of a noise coming from the engine. He says its either going to be a case of a Terra Clean or a whole top engine rebuild!
Pete.M
Terra clean is just for the fuel system right? If so, it seems unlikely that the engine noises would be fixed by terra clean. Unless maybe it's "pinking".
AdamR28
When was the oil last changed? I am guessing at the service but you never know! If so, any ideas what oil they put in exactly? Which engine is it? Edit: This could go on and on I guess, but basically stuff like that is snake oil. My guess from what you just said is they've put the wrong grade oil in so the top end is now all tappy / clattery. Should be a 5w30 fully synthetic ideally, VW507.00 spec. Ross McArthur
Its a 1.9 tdi VW passat. Ill ask about the oil then and see what he's got to say, as it was just after the service it all started to happen.
Prawny Baby
Went to the Pistonheads Pub Club meet at the West Meon Hut last night. Lovely roads for the drive there and back, and good company Good night out!

N.Wood
Suspected sticky turbo vanes on '03 octavia 130 asz with 175.5k on the clock. Tom Booth
I'd say that sounds pretty fair. Turbos are fragile things so I'd do everything to avoid working on it myself.

They come undone with a simple Mr muscle clean. One sec. It's so easy to do and works brilliantly. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/243533-the-mr-muscle-vnt-turbo-treatment-thought-we-needed-a-guide-of-sorts/
CurtisRider
Odd question perhaps but something I have wondered about. I was wondering if it would be possible to steal an ecu and associated parts setup from one car and transplant it onto an engine to make some sort of EFI setup? I know you would need to go for an engine with the same sort of specs and the mapping would need changing but could that work as a budget alternative to buying an aftermarket ecu?
Tom Booth
I can't see why not, but you'd be set within the constraints of that ecu. Whereas a standalone type gives you full flexability.

It can and has been done quite a bit, especially using the ECU set-up from older Saab turbos. There's a fair bit of info out there about it, but the Saabs use a nice set-up with boost control and the option of knock control. Although it'll depend on the engine you're wanting to run, a megasquirt may well end up cheaper/easier than adapting the engine to use the correct sensors for a factory system if it's not already similar to the new system. CurtisRider
Cheers for the replies chaps. It was just an idea as the 1.8T may have to go on hold for a bit due to budget and time constraints due to the house being a bitch to get done. I think I may just concentrate on rebuilding all the K Jet stuff and hope it gets a bit more economical and less lumpy running. Megasquirt is cheap for what it is, but it's still lots of money I don't have right now I fitted some CVs that don't have a ton of slack today, made so much difference to the car! I also had to sort out a top mount issue so figured it would be rude not to fit some spare springs that I had snipped in order to see what the car looks like an inch lower. I now want to lower the car further :$

CalRobbo341
Having a bit of trouble with my Astra H if anyone has any ideas on here? Asked around on some other forums like but worth a go!? So I've had trouble starting the car once before this, but that was purely because I left my side lights on for a few hours and then went back to the car and had drained the battery? Quick jump start and a run on the motorway and all was fine. But this time, did a 45 mile trip up to Preston and starting/driving was fine but to get back home had to push start it and also had to get fuel on the way home and it wouldnt start after that either; so another push start was needed. I know I didnt leave the lights on ect because I triple check that stuff now so it doesnt happen again. Im just unsure on what to check first/how to check it/and what any of you would recommend, its doing a ticking noise when trying to turn it over which I presume is the starter motor? I can only guess its the starter motor, alternator or the battery. Any help is appreciated
CurtisRider
I'll take some photos when the cars clean, its full of rubble from the tip trips its been doing! Utility Porsche Likely your battery is knackered as they don't like being run flat (especially when they get old), get it charged up then load tested. Might be also worth ch ecking you are getting charge from the alternator too
dann2707
Haven't really done much for a week on the clio as i've just started my new job! Been loving the drive to work though, just can't get used to how well it handles. Had a few moments where i've taken a corner and i'm literally grinning and laughing like a right f**king twat but it's just that fun! Gave her a nice wash this evening though. I love this time of year when you can wash the car comfortably at 8.30pm 20140731_204017 by dann2707, on Flickr 20140731_204214 by dann2707, on Flickr 20140731_204239 by dann2707, on Flickr 20140731_204258 by dann2707, on Flickr I really like this pic too for some reason. AdamR28
As Paul said. Plus, the alternator isn't designed to charge a battery, it's only designed to keep it topped up. So remove it and bang it on a slow charge overnight...
