Prawny Baby
FR is no different to a cupra, just later cars were labelled FR and had the 17'' LCR style wheels as above.Lovely cars. Probably worth £3k on that reg with sensible mileage.
David
Thanks for clearing that up. I am going to bring my OBD tool along with me, does anyone know where the port is located? Any particular problems to look out for? Leaking door seals? Dave
Luke Rainbird
Port is at the bottom of the centre console, below the ashtray at the back
CurtisRider
Just bled my brakes as they have been on my to do list since buying the car back in June as part of a general make sure all fluids are good kind of thing. All good on the first rear drum, undid the other sides bleed nipple and no fluid came out. I then hooked up my easy bleed to my spare wheel, still no fluid even under pressure. A push of the brake pedal then made a ton of poop come out along with old fluid and then fresh! Looks like my rear brakes need a rebuid the drum is working so I guess that's a good start. Tested the brakes out and the difference is massive, still shit micro sized 80s brakes but certainly better
Pete.M
Speaking of brakes, just spent many monies on genuine Volvo parts (awesome quality by the way) after having a terrible time trying to rebuild the old calipers and carriers. Nice feeling knowing that I've done a job 'properly' for once. Shouldn't need to touch the brakes for a good few years. Don't laugh at my one odd nut. Toby
So I've added this to the s2k, ...more outrageous parts to come later in the year
David
I did it! Now the proud owner of an FR! Only managed to haggle £150 off the price but it is in very good condition. I am already thinking of a new exhaust silencer...nothing outrageous but something that amplifies that beautiful sound just a tiny bit more? Luke Rainbird
Wicked, welcome to the fold dude! Save the cash for a while, get used to the new whip and when you're ready to drop some dollar on it you'll know where to spend it (plus if there are any little niggles to sort out you'll have the cash to hand!) george_seamons
If you're going your spend money on the exhaust anywhere, get a 3" downpipe. That's where the money is worth spending (the stock downpipe is SO restrictive its untrue). Infact, while you're looking, buy this complete system: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-Golf-GTi-Jetta-MK4-99-04-1-8L-3-Turbo-Back-Exhaust-Catback-1-8T-w-Downpipe-/331161432742?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d1ac272a6&vxp=mtr Myself, Prawn (running nearly 400bhp) and a few other high powered 1.8t's are all running it. For the money it costs, the quality is insane. I had to buy a new downpipe because I have a different turbo, but it will fit from the turbo all the way to the tailpipe on yours. Works out to about £170 posted, and mine came in 3 days. Literally couldn't ask for better! Dooooooooo it!
MadManMike
Do they do one for the TDI? I was looking for a decent 'zorst, £170 sounds amazing!
Greetings
With the first round of BMW Challenge coming up in 6 days I've compiled an edit from the last season to get me motivated. Current mood is - meh, it's expensive and some rounds are really dangerous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_Zs4c0waFU Enjoy (hopefully)
george_seamons
No, diesels are shit You could do what I did though and sell the downpipe and decat section and use that to fund the downpipe cost. I got £60 for my downpipe and decat section...could have got more, but I just wanted it gone. Literally went in 10 minutes. Once you are past the downpipe, the systems are basically all the same. You could probably even get an adaptor to reduce the 3" system to the 2.25" your standard system is for not many pennies, and remove the need to change the downpipe. Not actually sure if they are even a restriction on the tdi's.
dann2707
Do they do one for the TDI? I was looking for a decent 'zorst, £170 sounds amazing! Just de-cat it and remove the silencers Gets you instant gains, I paid £60 for mine altogether as I got £60 back for my cat. WINNNNNNNNPlus it sounds decent now. dann2707
Hahaha I do actually get compliments quite a lot from it but it's always " for a diesel" added afterwards haha Edited March 31, 2014 by dann2707
Toby
Mine sounded a tad different with no backbox.... only revved it to 5ish aswell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox50MABIrII Edited March 31, 2014 by Toby
MadManMike
I wouldn't mind chopping off the back box, that seems like a cheap mod that will make the sound a little better and free up some power by the looks of it... It's never going to sound great with a tractor engine in, but if it could be a little throatier that's alright. I wonder if anywhere local can do that for a reasonable price... Skoze
Enjoy (hopefully) Really enjoyed that! A whole lot of expletives came out, you're mental. The video of the Audi above just illustrates what's wrong with diesels; just as it sounds like it's getting going, BOOM, no more revs. Just go straight through and be a baller. craigjames
Enjoy (hopefully) The ONLY thing thing that wasn't right with that video was we need more engine noise! Don't know why, i just find being able to really hear how the engine is being worked really adds to any motorsport video. You appear to have a lot of fun competing, certainly comes across that way in your posts. They do look like fun events, a little sketchy, but fun! David
Ooh that exhaust looks good! Would I have to remap the car or make any other changes to support it? (Like re-jetting carbs to match an exhaust?...I'm a little old school!) What's the sound like too? Any effect on MPG? Loads of questions and I've not even picked the car up yet! Dave =)
N.Wood
So you literally just leave it with no backbox? Not even a bit of pipe to go to the oem tips?
CurtisRider
Nah the backbox is replaced with tube. It's such an easy job to do, done it to a few cars now! My Saab had a duplex one that I made out of scrap sections of pipe
trials owns
Looking at a 1.8t passat, 130k on the clock with full service history, How long should i expect on the average lifespan of the turbo? My mate had a bad experience with turbos and don't wanna follow suit!
AndrewEH1
Any disadvantages to getting rid if the back boxes?
