What other problems may I run into with a car That's been standing 2 years?

I'd check the brake hoses very carefully, they love to perish when sat. Belts would be worth doing and obviously all the fluids, plus the battery may well not last very long. Those are the main things I can think of off the top of my head.

Returned from the night event, managed to win overall. Part two tomorrow.

My friend who's known for doing ridiculous things went over the moon today. On the first run (he drives a Impreza Type R) he drove on very good wet tyres which were perfect for the conditions. He came 1st overall. So he decided to put on some super skinny winter tyres for the 2nd stage. Rather odd but that's how he is. On one part of the stage there was a 180 degree turn followed by a roughly 200m straight and then another turn. On the 180 degree turn the car understeered due to the rubbish tyres and he drove into a wall. He must have damaged the bonnet latch because it opened on the straight breaking his windscreen. Now usually you'd stop in such a situation but Peter decided to carry on driving as long as he was sure he was driving straight. The straight finished and he carried on into a tyre wall. Despite the hefty damage he continued and finished in the top 10. This would be strange behaviour coming from a thick teenager but this chap is over 40, he's very smart and we all wonder whether he doesn't just enjoy destroying his cars. His M3 looked like a complete pit (posted pics of it here a few times) and his Subaru looks even worse now.

Will have an onboard tomorrow. Despite winning the comp I was still 10s a stage slower than a pro rally driver in an E30 318is. I drove with him after I'd finished and was amazed. He's unbelievably skillful.

Other interesting things - there was a C2 proto rally car with LED lights. Not 20W, not 50W but 250W. 35,000 lumens. When he switched them on it was like daylight. Must have cost a bloody fortune.

Audi's are literally the biggest handful of monkey spunk ever.

Last night I went to bed early, there was a howling storm going on outside and it was chucking it down.

Last night the microswitch in the boot of my Audi decided it might like to have a rest.

Obviously being a quality vehicle it auto relocks after twenty minutes, what a great convenience system.

Until the rear wiper mech famously breaks apart and FILLS the entire boot membrane with water, along with all of the electrical contents of the boot which controls the rear convenience systems, the brake lights, the sound system etc etc...Oh, and obviously triggering the "oh shit somebody is entering my boot! Must be a thief, ALARMS!!!!"

I only discovered this when I removed the rear boot card and a couple of gallons of stale, filthy water showered all over me and the contents of my boot.

So I spent last night unlocking my car, waiting twenty minutes for it to relock, then unlocking it, waiting twenty minutes for the relock and alarm and then reunlocking it. Wash rinse and repeat that for 2 hours.

So I decided to disconnect the battery, having googled for an alarm fuse I discovered there isn't one. Unplug the battery, manually lock the drivers door.

Wait twenty minutes.

Sirens again. It's got a f**king secondary power source for the alarm.

Reconnect the battery, (all in the pissing rain, soaked through to the skin.

Lost all my interior convenience settings, no up and down Windows, no follow home lighting, no two click passenger unlock. Nothing...

f**k this.

Slept in the car with it unlocked and the key jammed in the unlock button.

It got to 5AM, I decided f**k this shit and drove to the Shell station to look at it in the light. I couldn't find the microswitch ANYWHERE to tell the car that the boot was shut. Literally couldn't find it.

I pulled more of the boot plastics off and found it is integral to the boot latch and there is a loom splitter half way up the rear glass plastics.

Unplugged it, wahooooo boot is showing as permanently shut. No more alarm.

What.

A.

fanny.

Do you not have that weird alarm button on the b post inside? When I fitted coilovers to the barge I ran out of light to fit the rear arch liners so they got left off for a few days. Somehow this sent the alarm into a shit fit, think it was the atmospheric pressure inside the car. Turns out the little button on the b post disables the alarm for towing purposes apparently.

Just spoken to the guys who have my car.

It threw the belts, which broke a bit off the rad, so needed a new one plus belts and whatnot. Why did it throw the belt? Because the power steering pump was seized. £650 well spent :( and that's assuming it actually runs after they've done that...

Are you extremely hungover or something?

The interior sensors and the tow away/anti lift buttons are there, however they only turn off the interior sensors. Not the boot hatch security. The issue I was having was that the boot hatch was saying it was shut, and it was locking and alarming the car, then as the voltage changed it was saying it was open. Or vise versa.

f**king wank design if you ask me.

£650, ouch! That makes me slightly worried, because on top of all the other problems I need to deal with, the steering pump has been making a loud whine for quite a while and I felt the belt slipping the other day.

Also annoyed because I had planned to get quotes for welding today but the garages that can do welding are seemingly all closed on Saturdays.

Have I mentioned that I also can't go above 45mph because the propshaft is vibrating? Why am I even bothering with this heap!

Ahh, tis quite. I thought it just disarmed the lot to be honest.

Good stuff dan. What setup you gone for?

Slow reply... I'm not on here much anymore!

I found out about this Polish company that make their own kits. - www.airride-system.pl

After a good few weeks researching them, I only saw good things! And figured that as along as I get everything to seal up properly, I can't see myself running into any problems as it's a pretty basic system! So I just took the risk and ordered it.

Gong to have a 2 way system, with a 3 button wired remote to control both axles separately, and together. The tank, compressor, valves, and wiring will all be in the spare wheel well. I plan on making up a false floor type board to mount the wiring to the underside, and then have the tank and compressor on top to keep it tidy.

Already got a bag full of goodies for the wiring etc, just waiting on the kit itself to be delivered sometime in Jan, and then I can fit it on a ramp at work! :)

Get yourself on retrorides and ask if there is anybody local with a welder? Chances are they are cheaper and far better than most monkey mechanics anyway

Absolutely this, there's a few guys up in Scotland on there, and being old car nuts they're likely to put a little skill and effort into it, rather than just slapping a plate on to meet MOT requirements. Unless you've got somewhere in mind that you know will be good anyway. Or, just cut your losses and replace the old girl, they're still silly cheap even for good examples, and you could swap over all your nice bits easily enough, but I suppose there's no fun in that, and if I followed that myself my Scirocco would have been replaced LONG ago! haha

Speaking of which, I found out I got the job I mentioned, so should have a reasonable income and much easier to plan spare time soon, meaning I can hopefully plow some time and money into the Scirocco. Buckets then cage are first on the list. Although I need to make sure rallying doesn't eat too much money, luckily as the co-driver my costs are pretty sensible and basically fixed for each event.
