Pashley26
I've gone a whole day without updating anything or even posting, rad huh! In reward I will be posting pictures, graphs and many other boring things. My mate Joe wanted to remap his beautiful Mk5 GTI - He was going to just go to the local Revo dealer (30 mins away) and throw a revo stage 1 on it. I basically told him he would be a mug to do so, and dragged him down to Niki at R Tech. It meant an 11 hour round trip and two tanks of fuel...Niki had a lot to live up to for this to be worth it! From reading reviews, going on websites and the like Joe was expecting 230bhp but would have been absolutely over the moon at 240. Strong figures for an otherwise totally standard 2.0TFSI Mk5. We set off at 6:30, destination R Tech. We had bought our gifts for the tuning gods in the hope they would look down on us favorably - Trip up there was good, lots of cool cars en route. An Aston with an epic plate - And a Detomasa Pantera with an even more epic plate! The owner of this was great, pulling next to us and then blasting off and spitting flames as we gave him the thumbs up. Then coming back for more. We actually missed our turning off the M5 and ended up taking the M69 and going around Birmingham because we were having so much fun! Niki has some huge projects and builds on the go at the moment, 1.8t's in EVERYTHING as well as building hybrids and general R&D. This was pretty special to see in a Mk2 - Sooooo, we spent a LONG time chatting...Like an hour just stood about putting the world to rights. Whilst we were chilling out Ben was doing a diagnostics and health check on Joe's car. All FOC and part of the service. Ben found a small boost leak as well as a slightly worn diverter valve seal. He also wound the actuator in to help hold boost when mapping. Whilst Ben was doing this lots of customers popped by, all super friendly and full of praise for Niki; treating it more as a social visit than anything I think Joe was starting to get the idea now. Car went on the rollers, Niki did a quick pull in it and even as a totally standard car the wheels were slipping on the dyno. Niki knew this was going to make good power. The way to stop wheels spinning is to spray WD40 on the tires, and do a couple of accelerations and sharp braking on the rollers to get more warmth in the tires. After about 10 mins of this we didn't have any traction issues. So, stock map and totally 100% standard car - 203.5BHP which is healthy, but totally bang on what you'd expect. No faults or issues to worry about. First map went on - Niki scratched his arse a bit - And pulled some funny faces and danced like a gnome - I went out for a fag and to talk to the boys next door and came back to find Niki had already mapped it! Joe had 241bhp with the first flash. Joe was over the moon, jumping on the spot and wanting to hug Niki. The response "Man boost..." Then Niki's wife turned up so we weren't sure if Niki was done or not after all we were very happy with 241bhp!, but we had some fun and it was lovely to meet her. Then Niki went back to the rollers. Twenty mins later he was staring at the screen shaking his head, looking very grumpy. Then he turned his head sideways with an almighty grin and stuck his thumbs up. One more run and a quick tweek and he had turned Joe's over the moon 241bhp to an at the time unthinkable 253.3bhp at 19psi with the smoothest and most controlled graph you'll ever see. We were very very very happy! Niki took Joe out for a spin and showed him the new boost, we both went for a spin in the car and then Niki told Joe to just go out and have some fun and make sure he was happy with the map. At this point we hadn't paid a penny. Joe came back and was gobsmacked, the car drives exactly the same as it did a stock vehicle. Just with 50bhp more pretty much everywhere, it's the best map I've ever seen for one of these at stage 1 and with Niki's TIV removal technique you can really tell the difference from a generic flash from a generic tuner. Joe was patched in, and had his terrorist sticker applied by Ben himself. And home we went! Joe keeps texting me to say he can't believe how great he is and that he loves his car more than anything. So I guess R Tech have done it again. Not only are they top of the 1.8t game, but it turns out he's also the daddy for TFSI's as well! Off the back of this I have got three friends who all want me to make the trip down there with them, including one who has a K04 A3 and wants a full custom setup. So I'll report back then Edited November 16, 2012 by Pashley26
ireson75
Where abouts are R-Tech? Is it Hinckley?
Pashley26
Yup. Phoenix business park. Thinking of going?
dann2707
How much did that cost altogether? Also wd40 on the wheels!? How does that work, epic.
Pashley26
£290 all in, don't know how WD40 works...I just know it does lol! Under £300 for 50bhp/25% increase in power; can't complain at that. Edited November 16, 2012 by Pashley26
ireson75
Yup. Phoenix business park. Thinking of going? Ahh no don't have a car yet I only live just down the road and frequently see the R tech cars. Might pop in at some point...
Pashley26
It's worth it, always lots to see and do. Niki's a very busy man, but his customers seem to use the place as a point of reference.
Jolfa
don't know how WD40 works...I just know it does lol! I think the 10mins of gathering heat solved the traction issue, WD40 is just a water dispersant to get rid of any moisture, WD, the clue's in the title
Prawny Baby
nah, the WD40 really does help stick tyres to rollers, most tuners use it as a tracion aid, even on a dry sunny day when they're having issues. Much like bar grips on a bike, WD40 helps slide them on, then sticks solid somehow. When WD40 won't hold a big car down, they move onto spray on carpet glue.
MadManMike
Any particular reason this wouldn't fit a 90bhp? It suggests 110, 130 and 150... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A3-EXHAUST-1-9-TDI-LARGE-BORE-D-PIPE-MILLTEK-NEW-/330486135743?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ASeat%7CModel%3ALeon&hash=item4cf2823bbf My exhaust is blowing so I thought I'd get a new one, but something better than standard. CurtisRider
Do you know its definitely blowing there? Have you checked to see if the gasket is still ok? Whats the rest of the exhaust system like? Can't help on fitment but you could build one for soooo much less than that! Just whip off your old one, reuse the plate (may need the size of the hole increasing depending on what size tubing you use), buy 2 prebent pieces of tubing, a flex pipe, some straight tube and find a mate to weld it together. There's very little point buying anything too special for a 90 unless you are wanting to do some serious work...
Greetings
f**k yeah, 3rd place in class and 9th overall out of around 170 cars Apart from a DNF on the first run which I managed to repeat it was an epic comp. In total all the runs took almost 20 minutes, the difference between 1st and 3rd place in class was just a few seconds. Really consistent runs too, all 5 were within 1s difference apart from one where I made a stupid mistake because the handbrake locked up.

There's people that enjoy that kind of thing, then there's people that would rather pay to have it done for them. I'm the latter. I figured that if I took it to a garage they probably charge me near enough that just for a standard one, so why not buy that and get a mate to fit it for me. I haven't checked anything else, I just recognise the sound as being a blown exhaust - it's loudest when I have the drivers window open and sounds like it's at the front. I'm looking to get a Cupra TDI next year so could re-use it on that. I'm an extreme noob when it comes to cars, what else should I be looking for in terms of problems?Just realised I worded that quite rudely, not intentional! CurtisRider
Go on eurocarparts, enter your reg and note the part number down on the CAT pipe (DP). Then enter the reg of a cupra TDI you potentially may get and compare numbers, should give an indication if these pipes are universal between all the 1.9TDIs then
MadManMike
Seems the same for the 90bhp and the 110, so should fit by the looks of it Thanks for the idea, hadn't thought of that...
CurtisRider
No worries, still worth double checking with the supplier on ebay/Milltek themselves, just email them your reg and ask if it's compatible.
Martin Reynolds
Just went for a drive, this happened : Throttle cable snapped half way up a dual carridgeway. Had almost nothing in the car, end up taking off two strips of electrical tape i had holding inner tubes together, and taping the throttle open a bit.

Best bodge I ever saw was a mate of mine who had a similar issue. Rigged some string up to the throttle body, and brought it out via a bonnet vent and through the driver's window. Pull on the string = go faster. Drove it like that for a hundred miles

huge
Bit of a long shot but I have a load of toyota starlet turbo ep82/ep91 upgraded suspension bushes, engine mounts, anti roll bars and strut braces to shift as part of an unfisished project (whiteline/cusco and ultra racing parts), everything is new but I just want rid of it if anyone knows someone who'd want the lot far less than what its worth if they collect from chester way? Please pm me if you know anyone interested!
