Anyone Tried Home Brewing?

JT!

Recommended Posts

Killing time before my shift started at work and saw a 'Mr Beer' home brewing kit reduced down from $50 to $30. It's cheap, but comes with everything to make a couple of gallons of Pale Ale inc bottles.

Did it all today and now I have to let it sit for a couple of weeks before bottling and waiting another two week but looking forward to the results.

Anyone else have any experience? I believe I remember someone on here telling me they nearly killed themselves with home made cider.

Tasted shit, made me feel ill and was messy. The measures and times are all wrong, and the ingredients aren't usually fresh enough to work, so you get a powdery pint of piss. If you enjoy a nice pint then move along, if you just want 15 cheap pints then it is good.

Prawns dad makes a wicked home brew, there is not a single person alive who has sampled it and will not testify that that shit f**ks you up.

Well we'll see how it turns out in 28 days. I don't think it can end up powdery as the only powder used was dissolved into boiling water. It was quite good fun putting it all together. Serializing everything was a bit of a pain though.

Although they do say it'll only be 3.6% AVB which is a shame.

never done it in a kit, just doesnt seem worth the effort, one of the blokes at work made a cider press out of an old bottle jack and some bits and bobs. we generally trade apples for cider with him(just windfalls etc). it may of been me that your thinking of, as we had some one year that was around 15%

from memory JT, if you want it stronger, add more sugar.(but thats cider based knowledge, not beer)

My dad used to make his own beer years ago, was doing it for quite a while and that stuff was rocket fuel though he could handle his beer. I wanted to dig his brewing stuff back out a while back but he got a good offer on it so sold the lot, gutted as he had about 8-10 cases of bottles so could make a lot!

Ok so today was the day I tried it. Bottle opened with a 'tsssssss' meaning I dind't f**k it up 100%. Poured it into a frozed glass, 95% head. Waited for it all to settled down and bam! First try and it tatses great! Honestly tastes just like any unfiltered beer out there. Next batch will be noral strength so i can get a little drunk off of it which clearly hasn't happened tonight.

Lol that's one way of saving money i have tried people's home made wine and it's lethal stuff!!

And a friend of mine makes her own wine every year ready for christmas it's surprising some of the flavours you can capture.. From a bottle of fermented liquid! :P

Never tried brewing myself but if you like Gin, then Sloe Gin around September time is quality to make and so simple. Leave it till Christmas to mature and it tastes so good.

One of my friends has tried this recipe (below) for cider, and it was lethal due to the fact he upped the sugar content. Nice easy way to start though as it only takes a couple of weeks from start to finish.

If you want to start brewing from home the trick I have always been told is make sure everything is extra clean. If it's not then the taste will be effected. The economics of it does not really make sense, so if your looking for cheaper beer then don't bother. Just pop off down to tesco, buy yourself a 4 pack and forget about it.

My mother in law makes sloe gin all the time, she finished a batch off the other week. Sadly I think it tastes horrible, it's just about bareable with some lemonade but I'd rather go without! Now, moonshine is where it's at!
