Laurence--Trials
I was going to take my front wheel to college tomorrow so that i could enlarge the holes, and i considered drilling some holes in the sidewalls too, How exactly do you do it? I was just thinking because you might have to center punch the rim to get the drill to stay in place but i didn't want to bend the rim, i basicly have no idea how to do it. How big should i drill the holes? and how much weight can you save (roughly? its a 24" rim")
supafly1982
i think the only way you can really do it is to centre punch the rim so you can use a tiny drill bit for the first pilot hole, then its a case of stepping up sizes without trying to jump up to too big a size at work. To punch try a sharp punch with little force so you have just enough for a small bit to catch, this way your not wellying the rim and denting it, will you countersink the rim when you are finnished? TommyBrew
If you want to centre dot the rim find something that will fit inbetween the rim walls, then you wont bend the walls inwards. Or you could simply put it in a square edge of a table or so on that will fit inbetween the walls...

Okay thanks, i wasn't planning on countersinking it, should i do it? If you want to centre dot the rim find something that will fit inbetween the rim walls, then you wont bend the walls inwards. I'd probally be able to find something to be fair. cheers Edited April 1, 2012 by Laurence--Trials
TommyBrew
Countersinking it would be a nicer finishing touch, a bike like the ones onza did in the t-mags, don't know if they still do or not. I'd probably do 6mm holes with a countersink finish
Laurence--Trials
Thanks for your help mate. Ill post the finished result.

Matt Vandart
to be honest with you, take a shit, you'll save more weight, its more satisfying and less effort.
Skorp
to be honest with you, take a shit, you'll save more weight, its more satisfying and less effort. Doesn't work that way Everything is soo much easier on a light bike, its really not much before you can notice a difference! Probably 90% placebo, but hey, that works too.. Altough, to drill the sidewall is abit stupid in my eyes. Loose to much strength compared to how much weight you loose Just use one of those ( don't know what its called in English) To get all the holes equally spaced. take a small drill first, then a bigger and not drilling more than half trought to get the Onza drilled wall effect. You dont need to clamp it when drilling. Edited April 2, 2012 by Skorp
Laurence--Trials
That's a compus (spelling) in English. I'll probably use that, thanks. I couldn't do it at college, so it's now a home job..
Leistonbmx
It's a discombogulator. You will save f**k all drilling a side wall.
Laurence--Trials
Decided not to drill my sidewalls in the end, however i've now got small holes in the rim main part, whatever thats called (if someone could give me the right word that'd be good.) I've also made the previously circle holes into squares, just wanted to check what im doing is okay and wont cause the rim to crack after like the first ride? EDIT: i know they're not perfectly square but not after a perfect shape Edited April 3, 2012 by Laurence--Trials
Laurence--Trials
Bump on this due to all the crap that "hardman" has been posting.
Carlperkins
its weakened your rim and made it look a f**k load uglier too. but for the 10 grams you saved its definitely worth it! hahaha
Laurence--Trials
My rear rim is fairly similar though..
Matthew_Gibson
I made a dual wall rim a single wall. 1st gap to front I had a pringle!! but as for cracking IF its going to crack it will be on the corner of the square. its just a stress point. Just for the heads up....
