How Do I Get This Bolt Out?

How Original

Recommended Posts

Well I did post this in the other topic but figured I'd make a new one so people actually see it (it was a few posts in on the other topic)

So yeah, I'm looking to do a bit fo servicing on my brake, but can't get one of the bolts out as an allen key head has been snapped in it (by the previous owner) so anyone got any ideas?

I'm also wanting to get a new set of bolts but not sure which I need off Tarty, if anyone could shed some light on that also.

Heres a picture of the current bolts...

And the best picture I could get of the offending bolt...

You could try cutting a slot in it and using a screw driver to undo it. If that fails, you could try a left handed drill bit as they sometimes bite and undo it, or drill a hole through it and use an easy out tool.

If you don't have the confidence the start drilling it out (or if someone else doesn't share a better idea) take it down to your local engineer and see what they would charge to remove it.

These bolts will do the trick.

Firstly, thanks a lot for the link, as you can see I definitely need a new set of bolts lol.

And yeah that's what the "without f---ing it" bit was about, I don't want to risk trying to drill it or anything and risk either bending my disc or really badly scratching it or anything.

Wasn't sure if maybe somebody had another trick to use.

lube with wd40 and get some mole grips on it?

Already tried lol, it's pretty well held in :(

this would be my first choice, any perticuler reason it wasnt working for you? you have to have the mole grips so tight its almost too hard to lock them up. My second choice would be to use a dremmel and cut a slot in it, make sure you wear eye protection as when those little discs shatter they explode! if you have the cash and cant be bothered sorting it then take it to an engineer, should only cost a few quid and they are less likey to make a dogs ear of it ;)

The head of the bolt was too thin and warped to get mole grips onto it, they just wouldn't shut, I tried all sorts, in the end I resorting to putting a screw driver head in the center of the allen key head, and battering it with a hammer, it seemed to vibrate it free.

But the disc is still perfect and not gone out of shape, so I'm happy.
