D Rock 45
I was out riding to day and my echo sl locked up and wouldnt coast, i thought that was the end of its life having it for 2 years now but it freed it self up when i was pushing it home. I would take a look inside but with the lockring being on the bashring side i can take a look, also dont have a sturdy vice to hand to take it of. Took my crank arm of and sounds ok but is very sloppy, slow to engage. So is it time for a new freewheel or can i salvage it with new inside pawls, springs, bearings So ive found and bought two second hand sl's lots of spears one just needs a clean out and pawl replace which i have, so i am just blasting the thing with gt 85 drying it all with a soft cloth then re-assembling with a small amount of grease on the bearings but i was told not to as it would make it skip. is the true or is it ok Edited March 29, 2012 by D Rock

Cap
You will have to take it apart to be sure but it is probably a damaged pawl. Don't use it until fixed, will cause more damage

You would have to either buy a new freewheel and use the broken one for spares or source another broken freewheel and hope the parts you need out of it are in working order. am thinking its thats but nothink is rattling around, i wont be using it for i wile then. I used to fairly regularly reprofile the pawls in my ENO to remove the burrs. Worth opening it up to see how bad it is- you need to take it off to replace anyway. Edit: Ok, that's f**ked. CC12345678910
looking closer at mt freewheel the casing has cracked not sure how long its been like that. buying a second had one, getting the best bits of both hopfully to make a good one If Im correct in assuming you've done what my my mate connor has done to 2 different SL's, simply put it pocket side down in the vice, gripping the outer so the teeth are touching the top of the vice jaws, mince the vice 'til you feel harsh on it, and you should be able to 'backpedal' your body away from the lockring, which in turn can be gripped, and backpedalled away. THIS IS IMPORTANT: check that your crank threads have not been damaged like connor's were, his stripped the very next ride, and he was only backwheeling a 3 set of stairs (badly, with rough technique). Now imagine that on a drop gap... I'm not saying your cranks will definatly strip or be damaged, just check. EDIT: If I am incorrect, then forget I said owt. D Rock 45
i got it of today, two pawls were snapped in half and the small crack in the first set of pictures was nothing, it ran right the way round inner case, got a second hand one ariving tomorrow hopfully. Going to take it apart clean it out and re-assemble it All sorted
CC12345678910
the small crack in the first set of pictures was nothing, it ran right the way round inner case That's not nothing!!! thats what strips your cranks because the thread expands from 1.37in internal Diameter to 1.375in when it cracks through, overtightens as you kick and takes the crank threads with it. I'm sure it used to say stuff like that the freewheel pages on tarty's. Even if my reasoning is wrong, I really wouldn't bother taking the risk.
