Martial Arts

I wonder if anyone else on here does martial arts?

Thought I'd start a topic, maybe we can get some discussion going, or track people's progress.

On sunday is the grading for Karate, I started it at the end of february so I hope to grade to the next level, which I think is red belt.

I did Mu Te Shin Do ( see here: http://muteshindo.com/blog/ ) for five years, throughout my senior school years. In it I attained a first dan black belt, instructors qualification and most importantly self confidence. I was bullied all the way through school, and it helped me to control, ignore and finally stop it.

Although I had to quit in September due to starting Sixth Form and having much more coursework and exam prep to do, I still follow the philosophies and lessons I learnt and eventually tought there. I also know I can control my anger, and defend myself calmy and properly now.

Would love to get back into it later on in life, albeit this or another martial art.

I see what you mean. I was referring to physical anger, although emotional anger is something I have never been able to control 100%. That outburst was an unusual one for me, but the guy who caused that had just taken it too far. I normally try and contain it, but every so often I let stuff out in one go, and I don't control the amount I release.

No excuse really, but there we go. The sort of person who you trust with everything, and then he uses that against you in an extrenmely harsh way, picking up on personal, family, relationship and academic problems you have to try and make you feel as small, worthless and sh*t as possible really wind me up. Again, my own fault for ever thinking I could trust anybody with anything personal!

Yea that was too far from me anyway, went for a workout straight after and realised it was uncalled for - edited it out now if you want to take it out of your quote too.

That's cool man. I admit I blew a fuse back when that happened, but overall martial arts (dare I go back on topic! haha ) has helped me calm down a lot, compared to my old self. On anothe rnote confidence wise it's helped me to no end! Beofore I wouldn't even work with someone vaguely new in school! haha

Even though I've only been doing this for a few weeks, I've already noticed an increase in confidence.

What does Mu Te Shin Do involve?

Mainly it revolves around the philosophy of "avoid the threat, then incapacitate it". In other words, if someone throws a punch you get yourself out of the way first and foremost, then think about armlocks/dislocations/breaks/throws/knockouts or along those lines....

Some of the stuff we learnt was actually pretty lethal!

Sounds interesting.

Sounds quite like ju-jutsu, which involves a lot of redirecting the opponent's energy.

Karate doesn't have much of that but the techniques for blocking if done correctly are meant to redirect your opponent's punches as opposed to just stopping them.

Yes. Realising how much energy can affect a confrontation can really swing things in your favour. I can easily throw an oponent accross a room by simply flowing back out away from his punch and back in, similar to a wave.

Did Krav Maga for 1,5 years, hope to get back to it soon. Incredible workout and most importantly practical without the spiritual stuff (not my cup of tea). It's somewhat of a mixture of boxing, wrestling and taekwondo but unsettlingly brutal. Plus the first few months involved scenarios you might come across in real life and how to react to them. Didn't really enjoy this part, far preferred normal combat which soon followed. I think that if you want to learn self defence and not just take MA up as a sport (technically KM isn't one) then it's a really good choice. It's important to find a good academy though, some I've come across are focused more on reacting to aggression than actually fighting and dealing with it.

The grading went pretty good. I passed! Got the orange belt.

I sort of messed up with some of the techniques, lol, used the wrong hand.

Still, I beasted the kata and the partnerwork went well, I drew a guy who I'd practiced it with before so it was just like a regular training session.

It was weird being in with a pile of kids. An army of midgets, that's how my brother described it. Thankfully the adults were up first, so it was all over and done with nice and quick.

I think red belt is next, looking forward to that already!

been doing mma for just over a year now, really enjoying it. It scared the crap out of me walking into the gym for the first time though.

I know i wouldn't be able to stick to one form of martial arts so mma works nice bit of everything, hoping to have my first fight by the end of the year.

did you do other martial arts before?

I m not sure how easy it is to start mma without other previous martial arts experience

I used to do karate (I'm chinese, pretty standard I guess) and got to orange belt but quit not long after that. I quit cos the place was a joke there was far too many kids and not enough instructors. There was 4 instructors to about 30-40 kids and maybe 5-10 adults some times.

The adults got instructors and I was being instructed with a 14 ish black belt kid and like 10 other kids pissing about (the kids was split into groups to train with the older kids). It also annoyed me that kids that young could get to black belt and still be shit. He may remember all the stances and moves but there was no concentration or power/effort in him ever. He can move his arms and legs in the right way but it looked floppy if you understand me.

From time to time I did get pull aside by a proper instructor for some one to one training which was great but that rarely happened. After I quit I threw away all my kit and certificates, I felt like they didn't mean anything, I just waved my arms and legs about in the right order and places and passed in minutes.

If I ever wanted to learn some form of martial arts, I'd pay a bit more and train with proper instructors that take it seriously. The place I went to didn't feel disciplined at all, in the martial arts way, not in the dirty way,

That sucks, it just depends on where you go and who's teaching.

It seems convenient that the dojo I go to happens to be the headquarters for the karate organisation I'm a member to. So the sensei knows his shit. It's also nice because grading happens somewhere familiar.

My grading happens in the same place with 50 million kids pissing about behind me.

I m not sure how easy it is to start mma without other previous martial arts experience

no experience just showed up looking really nervous and got stuck in, any decent mma gym will be more then happy to compensate for beginners my first 2 sessions i was put on a 1 to 1 basis with more experience members just running through the basics. All you need to start is a gum shield and groin guard you can get them for about £20 although i would recommend spending more on the groin guard as cheaper ones don't tend to fit to well. Im at a level where i can hold my own now and feel more then comfortable grappling with people far better then me. You learn so much from getting tapped out repeatedly. I used to get caught in triangles all the time but now have a very good awareness of these. I just do it for fun and fitness and it really helps with confidence in all aspects of life.

Biggest bit of advice is check the gym before you commit to it as there are a lot of gyms on the mma band wagon and you wont feel your getting much from it.

You'll notice in the better gyms that egos are not welcome and this really helps.

It was funny at the grading watching the kids just waving their arms about to the moves.

Really, it should get harder towards black belt with the quality of your moves having to get higher to pass the grade. It all depends on the organisation though. Ours seems pretty legit so I should think kid black belts will be at least decent at the moves.
