Trials-Ziggy
Recently I have noticed that there are a fair few riders with a cut of an old tyre zip tied to the bottom of there frames I've been riding on and off for around 2 years now and have only recently noticed it, is it actually nessesery to do this and would you better riders reccomend me to do this? Hope someone can clear this up for me:) Oh before I post this I ride in Leicester on a Onza T-Pro (usually weekends) with a lime green front brake cable (you can't miss it ) so if you see me give me a shout Cheers lads Zak
AndrewEH1
Only bashers use this ghetto option! If you have a well used tyre spare that is unusable/unsellable you may as well save £20 and cut it into a few frame guards. It will not offer the same amount of protection as a bash guard but is definitely better than nothing if you are planning to destroy your frame. aener
It's not necessary, no. It's main advantage is protecting against scratches, though I personally reckon having bits of tyre ziptied to your downtube looks far worse than the scratches it prevents. On the plus side, it will protect against any deep gouges a sharp corner might cause if you got unlucky, and it also offers a marginal protection against dents too - which might prolong the frames life a tad. Chris Borneo
Used to run a bit of old tyre but don't really hit the down tube enough to bother these days. If you hit the down tube a lot, it's probably worth protecting it with something otherwise wouldn't bother.
