dannytrialskid
Bled my brakes today, because I split my hose. Got oil on my rims. It's now too late to grind my rim, and I am going on a ride tomorrow that is over an hour away, so it will be too early to grind my rims in the morning when I leave. How can I get the oil off of my rims? - The brake is utter shit at the moment, doesn't hold anything, doesn't make an noise when I pull in brake. I have soaked my pad in hot soapy water to get the grease off then wiped them down and went over the top layer with a file. I'll try anything right now, because I don't want to go a ride where my brake just doesn't work! Jamie_Trials
Suppose some paint stripper would work okay, just dont leave it there too long, and I'd only do It on anodized rims. Well that's what I've done in the past.

AndrewEH1
What sort of brush? Old dish brush? Something like that. Same process as your pads but on a larger scale. Edited February 29, 2012 by AndrewEH1
N.Wood
A grinder works pretty good. All other methods I've ever tried don't work. It never goes back to being the same. meths may sorta work?
Chris Borneo
If it was me I'd have a go with some meths and an old toothbrush.

Chris Borneo
Oh yeah, might take a bit of time for your pad to bed in again if you've filed it.
dannytrialskid
Oh yeah, might take a bit of time for your pad to bed in again if you've filed it. I didn't exactly file it, literally just had a few strokes over the top, to be honest I don't think it even done anything :L
AndrewEH1
What's meths? Meths - methylated spirits, basically a household(ish!) cleaner.
Chris Borneo
Methylated spirits. That purple shit.
dannytrialskid
Old dish brush? Something like that. Same process as your pads but on a larger scale. 20 minutes later, and it cleaned my rims a bit. Brake is still shite. Brakes were perfect before I bled them. So it's either shit on the rims, or on the pads.
N.Wood
How early do you need to leave? I'd just say f**k it and annoy people for 10 mins in the morning. Some pads can kinda 'soak' up the oil too, so if you have any spares may be wirth throwing them on after you grind to stop it contaminating again Honestly, like I said before, its a pain in the arse and never works to clean the rim. BradJohnson
Clean your rim with thinners, or turps, give it a fresh grind, boil the pads and scrun them on some sand paper to take the top layer off, should be fine
trials_pimp
Stop at halfords on the way and get a can of brake cleaner. Spray on rims and leave it alone. That will get rid of anything on them. Then sand the pads down and hope they arent too contaminated.
Chris Borneo
Hopefully you can get it sorted but if it's still not right in the morning, don't let it wreck your ride. Most people would consider my brake (I only have one at the moment) to be shocking but it does for me. Just work with what you've got. You might learn something new. Good luck. Clean your rim with thinners, or turps, give it a fresh grind, boil the pads and scrun them on some sand paper to take the top layer off, should be fine Just out of interest, what does boiling the pads do? Me + Shit brake = Angry! But I suppose it will have to do. I have been looking forward to this ride for ages! Then my hose decides to give in. Bike 1 - 0 Me Fix brake, contaminate rims and pads.
