Andeee
So after many years of using magura hs33's i wanna go back to the type of braking i had on my old onza t-vee from 2003 which run on dual avid v-brakes... Can anyone remember what model of avids they were? Im getting annoyed with the maintenance and setting up with maguras. Plus my old v-brake set up was pretty mint. Smooth rim with coke or tar worked amazing . My main concern is what would the spacing of the v calliper be like to the cranks? I am running a 128mm trialtech b.b Trialtech sport forged cranks 38mm wide alex rim. I am also thinking of getting the v-brake adaptors for 4bolt frames and the onza magura hs33 pad adaptors so i can run my heatsink yellows for this set up. Advice for a good v-brake set up would be great. I am mainly wanting to stick to the avid brand and a good mid range price. Andy
SamKidney
Your idea seems pretty good. Though Id use heatsinks cnc v backings. Id imagine they would feel much stiffer than the adaptors and give you a little more room for adjustment should you need it. craigjames
You'd definitely be better off getting some backings and putting the material you have in them, much slimmer, neater and stiffer setup. Avid ultimate (of which i have 2 for sale, both with CNC backings) or a shimano Deore/XT vee arms. Slightly slimmer set up than the SD5/7 brakes, so more heel clearance. Lever wise avid SD7 is your best bet (also have one of these for sale) and a linear slic BMX brake cable. Also have some heatsink 4bolt/vee adaptors for sale too. Pugson
Agree with the above, except the advice on the lever, get an xtr, they're the dogs.

ghostrider88
Cheaper, simmilar shape of the lever, speed dial that is actually usable and only 7g heavier? Is that good answer for you?
SamKidney
Alternativley Andy, you could spend some time getting your Magura setup right. With all due respect, whenever Ive been with you, your setup seems 'rushed',for want of a better term. Get some new cylinder washers (echo sl split alloy washers are brilliant) Bleed your brake using thinner fluid (Phatworks Phluid feels great) File the tabs off your clamps. Then spend some time setting it up so its spot on. Thinner fluid will give you a quicker lever feel, sl washers will mean you can setup your brake easier (plastic washers crimp over time and make it harder should you need to reset it) and the filed tabs will allow a tad more clamping force to ensure your brake doesnt shift. Would be cheaper than an entirely new vee setup.

dpbayly
Im going the other way, ive always favoured the magura's ever since fitting them to my first trials orientated bike back in 2000 (a Saracen X Tort) and never looked back so i'd have to agree with "Echo Lite 09" spending time setting them up so there spot on makes all the difference, i prefer the solid feel you get as a pose to the spongy feeling with V's dont get me wrong they bite as well as magura's i just cant get the hang of the flex in the lever. So im swapping out my rear avid single digit 7 calipers with the cnc backed pads and SD7 lever for a trusty old magura.

If you know how to set the brake up properly and use linear slick cable and booster if needed,it feels just as stiff+most importantly offers much more hold than magura. SamKidney
Cheaper maybe, better,no way. Each to their own. Trying to help out a mate and prevent him spending more money than he needs to in order to get a good brake. He's got all the basics, and just a few minor changes could make a world of difference. I know man and I have no problem with that, but sometimes it´s cheaper to get the best components from the start if you know what I mean

I wanted to give a break from maguras and route back to the old braking style of v-brakes on a smooth rim with coke ;-). I thought about new clamps the echo washerless design. My current magura at the mo is about had it.... slaves are battered to sh*t, stripped thread in lever body to hold lever blade, lazy as hell piston... i can't be bothered to be fair man haha.. i know it sounds strange. i just wanted to go back to the feel of a v-brake where less maintenance is involved. All you need is a good set up a decent stainless steel cable and noodle n away you go... Plus with the amount of debt am in i need to resolve my problem soon... Doesn't help when i have a bill of £780 to pay by end of next month. So budget is a problem....
pogo
With all the braking developments over the years whether its V, disk or maggy no offense but is pouring coke over the rim a a viable replacement for just setting your brake up a little better? Not exactly it was just a thing we did back in 2003... Plus i want the power of a v back again to get the jist and feel of how they perform.
