Aii_Aitch
I recently bought a second-hand hydraulic disc brake (troll away). I re-bled it earlier, and I've used industrial-strength wipes to take off some of the ick from the actual disc and the pads. However, I did expect it to give a strong "bite" when I squeezed down hard on the lever, rather than taking another 5 inches to stop me. It's like I've still got small pieces of residue on it from whatever the previous owner has been doing with it... Any idiot-proof ways of getting the rest of the residue off? (That's what I think it is, I did take two hours to bleed the system as well as I could beforehand.) I've been told that putting the relevant parts in a solution of white spirit will get rid of any oils?
JD™
Likelihood is that your disc and/or pads are contaminated. Don't use white spirit, use methylated spirits. Wipes down the disc with them and a Brillo pad. Stick the pads in an old clean tin of beans or similar, fill with meths to just cover the pads and light it. Let them burn a long while, then put it out and leave them to cool. Stick em back on the bike and bed them in and you'll be in a much better position I'm sure. Which brake is it? Laurence--Trials
if you've come from rim brakes, discs tippicly dont have a massive amount of bite like a magura or vee (unfortunley-spelling) What brake are you using?

Okay, will do. Thanks. It's a Tektro Gemini. I don't think it's trials specific, but it's just to make my Onza Zoot look a little bit more interesting. Means I don't have to grind the rims, too. Laurence--Trials
it probally wont be THAT powerful which is why your expirencing this "5 inches" before it stops or whatever.

Luke Rainbird
Generally not, though they'll tend to have oodles of hold
