Matt Vandart
If you were going to build a single speed MTB what gear ratio would you use?
monkeyseemonkeydo
If you were going to build a single speed MTB what gear ratio would you use? 32:16 is the 'accepted' ratio. When I went singlespeed I think I ended up running 32:18 to start with though.

monkeyseemonkeydo
Ah cool I have an 18t sproket, did you stick with it dude? how do you find running single speed? I ran it for about 6 months before completely changing from the steel hardtail singlespeed to a Commencal Meta full susser (with gears). Was definitely nice not to have to think about gears and derraileurs etc and I think I did stick with the 18t while I was singlespeed. Go for it and see how you get on! Matt Vandart
ok I have done it (its on a full suss with full lockout front and back so shouldnt suck to much on the ups,) went for a blast around the town was ok, thought my lungs were gonna explode on one hill because I forgot about the lock out, will try it out in the woods tomorrow. Endohopper
32:16 is the 'accepted' ratio... Yup, seems to suit most speeds / terrain.Feels great on my S.S: Accelaration is good and it offers a reasonable top speed .That said ,I live in the topographically flattest land in Europe which is blessed with a vast system of well maintained bikelanes.
JDâ„¢
I wish you'd stop posting pics of that bike, it makes my desire to build something similar grow every time
