Brakeless Riding

Nice one Cai (Y) You've got pretty much nothing to lose by trying it really, which is the beauty of it. It doesn't cost you a penny to try it, so why not, really?

I got 28/14 on my bmx

I was running 28:9 :P But yeah, I guess they're two pretty different entities so it'll never fully cross over...

After having a good read through 'CleanZine' and watching all the video's I've decided to do this:

If I die riding brakeless I've told my family to blame you Mark tongue.gif

looking good man get ready to have the most fun/crashes you've had on your bike ever B)

also it's a rule now to anybody who tries this, you aren't allowed to put your brakes back on untill you can do a manual for atleast a mile without them haha (Y)

after all the types of bikes i've ridden and all the styles of riding i've attempted... nothing is more satisfying than when you get brakeless manuals dialled!

Cheers man. I've hidden my brakes away in a box - and they're not going back on for a while!

I can't do manuals any other way

 me too, care to elaborate as to why??

i have to manual brakeless because even when i put the brakes back on my bike im running a rear hs33 with hs yellow's on a sharp grind... and the last thing you wan't whilst manualing is a rear brake with instant bite and incredible hold. (i really need to build myself a more suitable rear brake setup, it's a bit overkill for a pro zoot that gets used mainly for street haha)

also my brake's are coming back off in about 20 minutes time (if i can find that pesky t25 to take of my disc), damn you mr westlake and your clean blog haha, every time i check the clean site it leads to me ending up down in my shed ripping my brakes off (Y) .. my task for this year is to finally get a 2nd bike built as a dedicated brakeless 24, get heck loads more practice in and hopefully one day shred with some the rider's on here.

Cheers buddy! Got the frame around Easter last year, all of the parts were just transferred over from my Heatsink 24UK..

We should have a brakeless ride in Carmathen sometime happy.gif Me on the Ashton, you on the Planet-X. Keen?

having a big, soft, squidgy rear tyre helps a reasonable amount for doing backhops and generally controlling the bike.

Having a big, soft, squidgy rear tyre removes the capability for gaps since landing skewed - the only way of stopping - causes the tyres to fall off the rim :P

Mine only get squidgy when I'm inch-pinching sidehops nowadays :P Too impractical otherwise.

I have two separate opinions on what i think of brakeless both good n bad. Not that am looking to start politics or ote like.

GOOD- Its a new skill/talent for riders who have the ability to manage most trials tricks or to get over obstacles. Which is quite impressive. To be fair i would not even dare try brakeless i have had a few sessions getting up stuff brakeless on a 2-3 foot wall. But riding brakeless is like Marmite- you either hate it or love it.

BAD- I know a few guys who use to do brakeless bmxing i.e. street and flat land. One guy who i know who fractured his skull and another lad who lost a tooth. That to me seems a scar for life. When watching brakeless videos i seem to cringe a lot.. To ride it your either tapped in the head or just off your carrot.

That's Jebus telling you to take the brakes off properly ;)

Ha ha, thought had crossed my mind but no. Couldn't ditch the brakes all together. Used to ride BMX brakeless but that's totally different for me. Taking the brakes off is to restricting on a trials bike. There's not much if anything you can't do on a bike with brakes that you can do on a bike without just don't pull the brake. I appreciate the simplicity of a brakeless bike an all (especially after nearly breaking my hand last night) but it's not worth it for me for trials. Having just a rear at the moment is bad enough.

I might give it a try though I'll have to leave my brakes on, I'm too lazy to remove and there's just not enough riding local to me to justify it!

Mark, what would you say is a good starting point to try brakeless?? Everthing near me tends to be 2½-3 foot walls and not really much to make a nice line with as it's all long and straight. I reckon it'd help me no end as my fail point in a comp is the 2nd lap when I can no longer hold my back brake from using it too much!

If you two must leave your brakes on, please at least take the lever blades themselves off for a bit. Deathgrip is nowhere near equal to physically not have a brake lever to pull - it's a mentality thing which can't be explained, just give it a go ;)

I guess so - hadn't really thought of that. I guess the gaps to 90 you do are f**king massive though, so that might explain part of that :P

If you've got any natural near you that's a good place to start in my experience. The uppy-downy nature of it means you'll learn about where and how you can control your speed and momentum, and it'll be more relevant for comps.

To be fair though, that could just happen to be the guys you know - I know plenty of people who ride brakeless BMX and they don't seem to get hurt more than those who do have brakes. It could just be your friends happened to be unlucky?
