Chris Borneo
Anyone tried this? I've got a 16t already and a 12t on the way which I was going to use separately but now I'm thinkin I might just chuck a 14t in the middle with a short cage mech and a thumb shifter. Only problem, I'm gonna have a 5mm gap in between each cog which seems a bit big maybe?
Luke Rainbird
Yeah, it's doable. Gotta be set up well though, else you get nasty noises and shit shifting. Might be worth mixing up some of the 2:1 and 1:1 SRAM/Shimano systems for general win in terms of cable pull, chuck in a front shifter for 3-speed glory and it's certainly doable if you play around with it. Mark W
You can take up 4t-worth of slack using a Trialtech sprung tensioner, so you could just sack the whole shifters/mech thing off and run one of those, then manually change gear if/when you need to. They've got a reasonable amount of lateral adjustment so there should be some way of making it work. If you're getting tight on space, you could always make the least-used sprocket something a little thinner like a Trialtech Race or Gusset 1-er. If you've got a Hope hub then digging in shouldn't be much of an issue, especially if it's not getting much action anyway.
Chris Borneo
Yeah, I've thought about just running a tensioner and shifting manually but I think I'm gonna want to change between the two quite a bit. Not all the time but it would be nice just to flick a thumbie and be in the right gear to cruise to the next spot. Main worry with running a shifter is that the 5mm gap between the sprockets is gonna knackered my chain.
