Matt24.
As title suggest, who runs gears these days. I did back in the day and moved away years ago, however am looking to put some on again, just wondering what set ups people use at the moment???? Matt Vandart
I sometimes use gears: shimano 8speed shifter road cassette (6 gears)on a hope trials hub. short cage XT mech. Its handy sometimes.
bikeperson45
I wanted to and did, just ended up destroying the mechs too much where as my Rohloff has taken a few good knocks and stayed good.
trials26
Hey I tend to run a road rear mech when I do, a sora or 105 (short cage rear mech) the short cage tend to be nicer - out of the way from knocks etc. Ive run a hacksawed gripshift in the past, or a thumb shifter out the way was quite popular... Hope this helps
Matt24.
sounds like times havnt moved on since when i used to run them back in the day. Cheers guys, will stick with what i used to run.........
aener
They really HAVE moved on. The people replying represent <0.5% of the populace. Not saying don't do it - just pointing out bikes are pretty different now from the old school. Stocks are running mod stems for God's sake!

Stocks are running mod stems for God's sake! you're soo not oldschool seriously, gears were so cool so much pain in the ass to make it work was breaking so easaly actually spend more time fixing my bike than riding it those were the golden years
Revolver
I cut a cassette up before, and just ran two speeds. It means you can use a decent thickness of chain. You need to space out the derallieur, and there are a few other complications I can go into if you're interested.
Chris Borneo
Started running single speed on my trials bike in the late nineties and I was the only person I knew who didn't have gears on a 26". Now I've just put a new bike together single speed and I don't know how I put up with trying to get anywhere in a trials gear. Think I'm gonna put together a 3 speed cassette now. Prob 12, 14, 16 I reckon.
err
gears are for queers! seriously though, i had nothing but trouble when i ran gears
planet x alan
Years and years ago a guy I knew was on about setting up 6 gears evenly spaced on a king hub using a modified (bodged) road bike downtube shifter with a spaced out mech and wide chain. Not sure what became of it but it don't sound a bad idea.
JDâ„¢
Ran gears for years with no tears. It's all about short cage road mech, 6 speed cassette and a thumb shifter on the seat stay
Scott Gibbs
I used to run gears back in the day. Now i run 2 cogs and undo my tensioner and move the jockey wheels across to the other cog. Takes about a minute to swap over.
N.Wood
I used to run a modified SRAM gripshift after i got fed up of twatting my thigh on my 1994 XT rapidfire shifter. I guess that problem wouldn't arise these days now bikes arn't so short. Either way it worked fine hooked up to a shitty Sora mech and modified 6 sp close ratio cassette. Chris Borneo
To be fair, so does riding from spot to spot in a stupid spiny gear. Pros and cons to each I reckon. Edited January 13, 2012 by Chris Borneo
Matt24.
sstien I am pretty sure with a slightly harder gear I would have made that gap to the black block....... I do remeber gears being a pain however I have a lot more patience now I am a little older. I may still twat my leg I ride a 609 so not that long low......
