Matt Vandart
I am currently running a hope trials hub on my all mountain bike. This obviously has a disadvantage of gear spread (?) My question is: I have an 8speed cassette 11-32 and was wondering what was the biggest tooth step up can I get away with to cut out 2 gears and keep both the 11 and the 32. I hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance. Matt

Thanks in advance. Matt Try it and see! To be honest you may need to sack off the 32 though and run things a bit more close ratio. I think the maximum 'tooth step' you can get away with will depend on the gear in question. Going from a 29-32 will be less of a step than going from an 11-14 if you know what I mean. Matt Vandart
Ah I see, oki dokis, I was going to try it anyway just looking for info before hand so that I can gauge whether its my shit setting up skills rather than trying to do the impossible. What ratios do you have to play with? I guess the best bet if you really need to go from 11-32 would be along the lines of 11-13-16-20-25-32 with 'tooth step' increasing (almost) incrementally as the sprockets get bigger. But yeah, to get from 11-32 in six steps may be asking a bit much of your chain and derraileur!
err
i'd guess you could get away with a fairly big gap in sizes, have you seen the megarange cassettes with the massive 1st gear? like this: edit; that's a screw on in the pic, but i just put it up as an example of the jump in size Edited December 7, 2011 by err

ZeroMatt
Did the same thing myself a while ago on a 11-28 cassette, found that removing the 12, 13 and 16t sprockets worked a charm. It ended up as 11-14-18-21-24-28. Edited December 7, 2011 by ZeroMatt
