JackMeek
I have been using a 2.2 conti mountain king on and off now for years. I know it is not the best for grip but does hold really well to abuse. Im looking for more grip. Which the mountain king is a bit to hard for some natty and is really frustrating trying to keep grip on angled rocks and stuff. I want to keep it the same size and under 530grams What other tyres are out there. I saw the tryall shift tyre but the side walls look pants and this put me off it but the grip i can see is pretty good. Hope some one can help. Much appreciate it. Filo
I'm also intrested in this topic. I've tried a try all shift. Got 3 cuts In the sidewalks withing 3 weeks. For me it's to light as a front tire, the sides are to thin. Because of my husky stature I have to run higher air pressure. I found with the the pressure I need it has minimal grip,to get the right grip a had to deal with pinch flats. I honestly wouldn't even run this tire on a xc bike. Im currently running a max is ardent and it is also terrible. The only tire I really like is the old try all,dam you try all for changing your tires
isitafox
Why not a modded tryall stiky up front? I got mine off Mark W who'd taken off every other knob on the sides and cut down the middle ones to open them up a bit and aid grip. Again the sidewalls are pretty thin but I do street and ride comps with mine and not run into a pinch flat yet!

Doing a mod to a tyre makes me feel like i have purchased the wrong tyre as it should be the right tyre for the job in the first place. Its looks like this is the tyre that might have to be use. So no other choice out there to meet the challanges of natty for 26"?? Edited December 5, 2011 by JackMeek

There's only ONE reason I don't have them, and that's the wear rate when having to foot-scrub to slow down

I know I sound abit like a twat, the statement about modding could be same for grinding rims, better brake levers. Jack I run a standard tryall not nodded at all and its brilliant a lot better then a mountain king which I've also run.

I think a sheet of sandpaper would last a hell of a lot longer compared to them. Jack i have always sworn by maxxis. currently running a 2.10 advantage tyre which i've been running for at least 3-4 years now. reasonable weight, nice grip and the wear life is just awesome got more than me moneys worth there! I don't belive that a tyre thats lasted you that long has "nice grip" Andy. Not the kind of grip Jacks looking for anyways!

SamKidney
For the kind of grip Jacks looking for, Try-Alls are the only tyre I can suggest with the characteristics that suit. I've found my Try-All Lite to be superb. Far better than Maxxis for that matter. The grips excellent, the puncture resistance for a tyre of its weight is brilliant, and they are so much more stable ( In conjunction with a wide rim ). Yes the wear rate is higher than most, but I'd much rather pay more for a tyre that I know will perform when I need it to than pay less and be unhappy with my rubber. +2 On carls shout. Any Tyre thats managed to last 3-4 years either isn't ridden often, or the compound really isn't up to the job when it's really put through it's paces ( which Jacks looking for ). (Maxxis Weigh a ton, and have to be the amongst most horrible tyres I've tried on a 26 ).

I wear out more rear tyres than fronts. i even used that advantage tyre when i use to do comps and never had any problems with losing grip. My maxxis tyre was made before quality of trials products went down hill and of the verge. Now days all this modern stuff doesn't have a long enough life span compared to stuff from 4-6 years ago. I need a time travelling machine and define to you lads the meaning of quality.

Im not going to clog Jacks thread so I'l leave on this note. You have to look at the level of riding involved here Andy. In this case, he needs a high performing tyre more than any of us two. From my own experience, I've noticed that Maxxis tyres will loose grip well before my Try-All's will. Jus' sayin. If your tyre's suit you, great stuff. I highly doubt that a hard compound tyre (it couldnt be anything else if its lasted that long) is up to the job. Go Try-All! Ali C
Well it has and i am quite pleased with it. If only Michelin Hot S tyres were still made they were absolute boss and old skool! Don't think I can trust the opinion of anyone who thinks the Hot S was a grippy tyre They were awful! Another vote on Try-all, so what if they wear out sooner, even a worn out one is still grippier than tyres meant for XC, they are a decent weight too. Cutting a tyre isn't a bad thing either, the comparison to grinding a rim was a good one.

Cutting a tyre isn't a bad thing either, the comparison to grinding a rim was a good one. I was going to say i remember washing out on a Hot S on a XC bike when i was younger. There is a glaring fact that i recognise the Try-all tyre is grippy. Im not that bothered about it wear rate. I was on the search for another tyre that might be out there as a alternative because there is a big cycling industry out there and maybe someone from the forum had a answer. The choice of a Try-all tyre is not that i don't like it but more that i wanted a option before making a final choice. Might get a Try-all sticky and get a blade to chop it down a bit. @ around the £30 mark its the way it looks i will go.
J.KYDD
I'm running the Try-All Shift front and love it I ride alot of natural and have been super impressed with it
dave33
try all shift is really good, does make a fair difference if you run it with a wider rim than the try all narrow one to punctures. maxis high roller in the super tacky in the narrow size 2.10 i think you can get them from tarty and france is probly the only thing to come near grip wise
pengsmelly
I'm running the Try-All Shift front and love it I ride alot of natural and have been super impressed with it You told me it was puncture happy ... but then again, I guess any light tyre is really haha.
