Chris Akrigg And His Helmet

Been watching Trials Noir this morning and noticed that 90% of the time Chris Akrigg doesn't wear his helmet, this made me think how lucky he was that he wore it when he fell down that small cliff face as the paramedic on the scene reckoned had he not bothered he wouldn't have survived.

I'm gonna throw my conspiracy theory out there and say that the paramedic would have probably been asked to say that even if Chris had landed on his knees and broke both his legs, without his head ever touching the floor...

Of course, I don't fully believe that.

Trials riders really need to get over the whole helmet obsession. I'm definitely not saying you shouldn't wear a helmet but I find it so bizarre how obsessed trials riders are with whether or not other people do.

Even stranger than always picking up on other riders helmet habits is when seemingly people enjoy a video less if the rider isn't wearing a helmet.. WUT?!

At least it's a good obsession to have.

Personally I can't ride without one, I just feel like something's going to go wrong, considering I land on my head enough when I do wear a helmet. Also I don't really like riding with riders that don't wear helmets just in case I might have to pick their brains off the floor. I know it's their decision so I don't go on about it or anything. Also, for me, watching videos wear people don't wear helmets gives the video a shift from skill to needlessly dangerous.

Couldn't agree more with this.

Having said that, I wear one all the time 'cause I'm a sketchy b*****d

Didn't post in a kind of "Oh my god what a knob for not wearing a lid!" sort of way, more the fact that I find it odd in a way seeing such a high profile rider riding without one and I wonder if he'll continue to wear one more often when he gets back on the bike or not.

No - that's fair enough - just know that that's not how we meant it, either.

It was less a comment directed at you specifically, and more an observation of the average rider.

If someone posts a video, even if they're amazing, where they're not wearing a helmet, you can literally guarantee what one of the first two comments will be.

I get you i think he just rides street a lot, and it seems to be a i'm cooler riding street without one? I think its also a confidence thing he's been riding that long he knows he doesn't really put a foot wrong and defiantly knows how to bail.

As far as trials riders being obsessed with helmets i don't own one and i don't feel i will be happy on the back wheel or until i do!

I find myself asking: why wouldn't you wear a helmet?

I wear my helmet every time I go out and have done for about the last year or two.

The previous 9-10 years of trials riding were a different matter, had never even put one.

I do think high profile/sponsored riders have a moral obligation to set a good example to the younger riders.

If you don't want to wear a helmet that's fine, but what irritates me is when people go on about how certain kinds of riding means you're less likely to hit your head that others. Cracking your head open on a bike can happen at any time, and it's really completely random as to when it'll happen so it's just best to have one on all the time. I get a little irritated when I see good riders ride without one as there's no good reason why they shouldn't have one.

im not biased in any way towards wearing a helmet, neither towards not wearing one, i personally don't wear one.. but i really do believe it's entirely down to the rider if they want to wear a helmet or not! still i do find it very strange how about 70% of bmxer's dont wear helmets, 90% of skater's don't wear helmets, yet 99.9% of trials rider's do wear helmets!

thinking about it, maybe it's a bit like the whole "monkey see, monkey do" situation where people who are taking part in whatever there chosen sport may be, seek influence in the professional's they see taking part in such activities and follow suit, wether it be helmet's, baggy jeans, skinny jeans or gay a$$ justin bieber haircuts.

i think that post make's sense anyway, but the main objective behind that post was to hopefully stop anyone asking me where my helmet is next time i post a video haha (Y) as i don't wear one, even if i did wear one i would still have the same opinion ,in that it's entirely up to the individual to make that decision themselves.

i'll admit to the fact that i find it hard to watch vids of helmetless riders, bmx trials or otherwise.

it just seems silly to me to put yourself at extra risk of injury when doing what are already dangerous activities, i never used to wear a lid until i looped out and twatted my head on a curb, the 2 day headache and time off the bike convinced me to get one!

i wouldn't ride without one now

Really depends what kind of riding you're doing, and your skill level :P As the risk of falling off and how much it would hurt if you did changes.

I personally always wear one, because it helps me go bigger. (I use the term 'bigger' lightly) A sort of confidence booster, but if you're riding on the edge of a shear drop.. it's either going to go smoothly, or go reaaaally badly, like in Chris's case.

Skill level doesn't even come into whether or not you could injure yourself. No rider no matter how good can predict a chain/freewheel/pedal/stem/handlebar/etc self destructing at a vital moment. Think back to the start of Chainspotting when Ashtons chain goes on him!

I don't ride with people who don't wear shin guards for the simple fact that I don't want to pick up pieces of their shins when they slip a pedal or have to clean up blood. It's just irresponsible to not wear proper protection at all times.

See how stupid that sounds when I insert another piece of safety equipment in there? About as stupid as it sounds when people complain what other people are wearing when it has absolutely no impact on how you yourself ride. If that person doesn't want to, why is it anybody's place to tell them otherwise?

Oh, and I also don't ride with people who don't wear gloves or dedicated trials shoes
