N.Wood
I'm what some people call technologically spasticated. I'm after a TV for my living room, max of about £300 preferably more like £250. I'd guess the size of the room would warrant a 32-40"-ish screen. I DO NOT GIVE A SHIT about HD, refresh rates, megagigawatts or fandangoes. I just want something I can watch some TV and the odd DVD on. I don't want a shitty brand - Sony, LG, Samsung etc are all fine, no Makro specials. Now LCD, plasma, LED... Which would suit my needs best? If someone could give me the pros and cons of each, and any particularly good deals they've seen recently (E-buyer any good?) that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! I'd say that if you don't give a shit about how it performs as a TV then just pick the one with the nicest remote...
AdamR28
Pretty sure the Gadget Show had a TV shootout this week, I seem to remember a Hannspree won at £200 for 32", HD, plenty of inputs, etc. Do you want inbuilt freeview and DVD player? N.Wood
I do give a shit about performance - How long it will last, picture quality, if the pixels are going to die in a year, biuld quality etc. But like I said, I'll be watching tv on it, not playing games etc which need a high refresh rate. Inbuilt freeview would be great, seems the majority have this these days? Dvd player is a nice bonus but not a neccesity. Thanks Ad, I'll try and find it on iPlayer or something?! AdamR28
Can't remember exactly, but here you go! http://fwd.channel5.com/gadget-show/videos/challenge/budget-bedroom-tvs http://www.google.co.uk/#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&source=hp&q=hannspree+SV28LMNB&pbx=1&oq=hannspree+SV28LMNB&aq=f&aqi=g-s1g1g-s2&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=810l810l0l2195l1l1l0l0l0l0l116l116l0.1l1l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=4490b66f1f36cf5d&biw=1280&bih=934 http://www.ebuyer.com/279821-hannspree-sv28lmmb-1080p-full-hd-sv28lmmb?utm_source=google&utm_medium=products&gclid=CMq1prbSz6wCFYYPfAodCU11qQ The Gadget Show is mostly bollocks nowadays (apart from perving at Pollyanna), but that seems a legit good TV for the cash. JT!
LCD LED tv's are really only good if you want something super thin so you can hang it on the wall, if you're not interested in that then stick to a run of the mill LCD. Plasma TV's have seem to gone a little extinct now. Then from there, just stick with a well known brand and go buy whatever you feel looks good, if you're not going to be spending money on a tv with high resolution and high refresh rates, you might want to consider putting that money into a better warranty. Yea, that was a bit of a silly comment on my part to be fair... There was a recent thread where everyone, including me, bummed Samsungs - and for good reasons. So if you want to go down the 'safe' route in terms of reliability, build quality, looks etc then that's where I'd go. I saw that Gadget Show episode too and the Hanspree looked good but I still wouldn't trust it for some reason. I suppose if you're not going to be worried about HD and suchlike then go for the one with the least you can get - what it does have, that you need, should be decent in theory! AdamR28
Yeah, Samsung stuff is pretty decent in my experience too (LCD TV, maybe 3 or 4 monitors through the years, DVD player broke after a couple of years though).
Krisboats
Just go in a shop and look at a couple to see if you can get on with the remote/style of the tv. Note down the model number and go find it cheaper online. Given you've ruled out half the options you've only really left us with one you like and one that's cheap, both of which you can ascertain for yourself. For basic tv viewing 40" will not benefit from 1080p. So pretty much any flatscreen that has HDready will be futureproofed, just in case you change your mind later I would be highly inclined to say a plasma would be a better choice for you as they generally display non-hd content better and most cheap LCD's will bug you after a while as film credits and scrolling text in general is usually juddery and hard to read. N.Wood
Well I bought a 32" Samsung which looks nice but didn't realise I needed a cable so will buy one today and may be able to watch a bit of tv tonight.
