Topsy
So I've had a pair of Inspired pads, Citrus pads, Rockpad Greens and now Phatpads. All of them were ok once they were bedded in, and after a time their performance went downhill (or they broke before;Inspired, Rockpads) I've had a pair of Phatpads for about 1.5 months, and was very pleased with them, until last Thursday. - They have no bite, no hold and no sound anymore. - Rim has a worn-ish grind. (Did a medium grind 3 weeks ago. Inspired rim, from the Pro 2010) - I've not changed any setups. - They are so weak that they can't even stop me from falling backwards doing a manual :$ - They could not have got oil on them. - They ARE set up squarely. The only difference really is that it's a bit damper and colder outside. I had the same problem with the citrus pads without a grind, but I could solve it by taking them out and rubbing them on the floor a bit. But this isn't helping with the phats. Any Ideas what i could do? Bike is not very trustworthy at the moment :/

Dan6061
Tried cleaning your rim? Hot soapy water, rinse it with water many times over. Ride around dragging the brake, let it dry, win?
Topsy
Tried cleaning your rim? Hot soapy water, rinse it with water many times over. Ride around dragging the brake, let it dry, win? Did that twice yesterday. Was ok after the second time. However, today, now that everything has dried properly it doesen't work again!? 0.o
Matt_Thibeau
Give your rim a nice harsh grind with a new grinding disc and sand the surface of your brake pads?
Topsy
Well, that is what I did last time this occured, but I don't think I can give my rim a harsh grind every 2.5 weeks for long.. (+ trying to save manuals is sh*t with a harsh grind )
J Trials 31
It may be an issue with your maggie then. Your lever feel squishy?
J.KYDD
Of all the pads i've used, Phat pads are the only ones i just couldn't get to work.
Topsy
Lever feels quite ok.. Only thing is that one slave would sometimes not retract again totally, but I don't see how that could cause the issue..
chris4stars
last time i had issue with a pad that seemed to loose all performance it was due to some contaminant on the pad (not necessarily oil)...make sure you give the rim a really good wash and then use your grinder with an old disk on the pads... sounds daft, but it was the only thing that properly cleaned and leveled my pads, done right you will loose barely any material i had the grinder upside down, and used the area close to the centre of the disc. hold the pad firmly and level and let the disc to the work. you'll see a little bit of pad come off on the disc and thats you sorted with (for me) what felt like a brand new pad Edited November 30, 2011 by chris4stars
Phatmike
Strange they've stopped working so suddenly.. As suggested, try sanding off some pad material (a sheet of rough sandpaper will do the job), cleaning the rim and applying a fresh grind. As they were working well beforehand, contamination does seem the most likely - even a small amount of say oil in a puddle will be enough to ruin a brake. Topsy
Something pretty strange happened.. I went to my grandma yesterday evening, left the bike outside in the damp garden and when I went home 1 hour later the brake worked like a charm. That would be fine for me, but they decided not to work the next evening. Could it have something to do with humidity? Would be pretty strange actually! Well, I'm going to take it to my friends bike shop and take everything apart & clean it/sand it/grind it again. Thx or the help!
Topsy
They are crap again. My bmx u brakes are better at the moment.. I'm slownly starting to wonder if it might actually be my rim? the grind is also worn down pretty bad after about 8 hours of riding. Is that normal? I usually don't go too deep when grinding.. Echo-SL
It may be an issue with your maggie then. Your lever feel squishy? My lever seems kinda squishy. This a bad thing? Maybe your bleed is bad? Or there is a leek? Edited March 12, 2012 by Echo-SL
siontyrex
this might work if you think your rim is the problem. you should do ductape on the rim than cycle a 10 meters or so with a little pressure on your brakelever and than take the ductape of. make sure you place the tape the right way around otherwise youll pull the tape straight of. and than you can clean your brakepads if neccesary this works for me. although i dont have any experience with phatpads. TROYston
Random idea. But what direction are you grinding your rim? I had this problem with my mod ages ago with Echo pads. Tried washing, petrol sanding and so on. Then i put my old DX32 rim back on and it worked fine, but the pads lasted a day with a super harsh grind. Cap
Use a light grind, try not to drag the brake too much or get any crap on the rim. Always seemed the best to get the best results for me with most pads. Hope this helps
Topsy
will try this if I can get hold of any tape! I actually don't really know which way it was done last.. Use a light grind, try not to drag the brake too much or get any crap on the rim. Always seemed the best to get the best results for me with most pads. Hope this helps Will get a new grind tomorrow and try this! Might be the dragging, as i'm not the best at brakeless manuals Thanks, hope something here helps!
