Laurence--Trials
I've had some problems with my V!Z headset, its eaten.. like totally crushed to mush the top headset bearing, it doesn't do it to the bottom one, only the top. I have no idea why, anyone else had this problem? Its happened twice now and im starting to think about getting a new headset. I always keep my headset tight so it doesn't wobble so that isn't the problem, dont know what else it could be?
AdamR28
Bearing fitted upside down? Pics?
Laurence--Trials
Nope, its the right way up, fits nice a snug into the headset cup. No pics for now, at college.
JD™
Starting with the completely obvious, so don't be offended, but you definitely tighten your headset the correct way yea? Make sure the stem is loose first, then tighten the top cap, then retighten the stem. Otherwise you'll definitely have problems. Like I said, I'm not assuming you don't do it right, just checking! Laurence--Trials
Yeah always do that I have it as tight as i can without it making the steering stiff.
AdamR28
That's too tight - but shouldn't be killing the bearings.
Laurence--Trials
Okay, how tight am i looking to do it? I might be able to get pictures of the mush left over from the bearings..
AdamR28
Just enough to stop the play. Pics of how it's set up when you put it together would be useful.
Laurence--Trials
Okay, i'll try and get some tomorrow. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it happening either with this or any other headset?
Ali C
nope, it's usually the bottom bearing that goes first too. Are you replacing the bearings or getting a new headset each time? If you are replacing them, are you getting the correct angular contact bearings or normal bearings (like in hubs etc)?

Never had a bottom one go, perfect condition still. I typed the number off the bearing into google and got exactly the same sized bearing. Unless they came with the wrong bearings i have the right size in there.
AdamR28
Something is definitely wrong in the setup, headsets bearings don't 'just break'.
Laurence--Trials
Thats what im thinking to be fair, NEVER heard of anyone else having this problem, have you adam? What could actually cause them to brake? Edited November 14, 2011 by Laurence--Trials
AdamR28
I haven't either. Over tightening, incorrect fitting, wonky head tube.

I dont know.. i rase the frame so the headtube is flat on a peice of wood the bang the cup in with another peice of wood, it works and it looks nice a flush with the frame though.
