piperfraz
A few months back my Trialtech Race rear hub just exploded. At the time I just bought the same hub, but with sealed bearing (I had cones before). So now i have the hub shell in my garage and I want to get it usable again! I know I'll need to get a new axle, but is there any way I can make the hub sealed this time? Details of what I would need would be great, or if anyones done it before and can help? aener
I know it's a wasteful mindset - but it'll cost you more to fix up than it would to just buy a new one. Also - I'm reasonably confident there's no realistic way of putting sealed bearings in there. Not 100% on that, but somewhere around 98-99. AdamR28
For the costs involved in making that usable again, it's cheaper to buy a complete hub.
SamKidney
Im thinking, with the amount it would cost for someone to machine down those bearing races, for the amount it would cost to get a decent set of sealed bearings, the amount it would cost to purchase/ get an axle machined, would cost almost as much and maybe more as a new hub WITH sealed bearings. I wouldn't bother personaly. Maybe rebuild it using a cheaper axle and bearings and sell it on? monkeyseemonkeydo
It could be done but unless you have a lathe in your garage, the skills to use it, plus a bunch of time it simply isn't worth it.
Greetings
You'll need to buy new bearings but more importantly make a new axle and spacers. Not worth it.
piperfraz
Ah okay I see.......maybe in the winter if I can't ride. Would the lathe be to make the axle?
Luke Rainbird
Could be, though mainly for creating the correct internal profile for a sealed bearing I'd have thought.
piperfraz
I think I'll leave it for a bit, seems like it's not quite as easy as i though.....
monkeyseemonkeydo
Could be, though mainly for creating the correct internal profile for a sealed bearing I'd have thought. This, but also the axle of course.
piperfraz
This, but also the axle of course. Can you not purchase axles from tarty, or a local bike shop, that would fit?
monkeyseemonkeydo
Can you not purchase axles from tarty, or a local bike shop, that would fit? Possibly but there's no guarantee it'll be compatible plus the Trialtech Sport axle costs £20 so we're back to just buying a new (or second hand) hub.
