Alex Dark
As above really, my cheapy rolson grinder has just died so looking for a replacement. Needs to be really good quality and ideally variable speed. Any ideas? ( obviously 115-125mm size for grinding rims )
Luke Rainbird
To be honest, unless you plan on using it for a large amount of other stuff I wouldn't worry too much about getting the best grinder you can. For grinding rims you won't need anything uber powerful and there's a lot of alu shavings flying around that clog up and burn out any grinder. Chances are you won't notice a huge difference in lifespan between a £20 and a £100 grinder if it's just for the bike with relatively infrequent use. Grab something from a reasonable name with decent reviews and you should be set. If you do plan on using it for a lot of work on cars/boats etc too, of course, then ignore that and grab something pro
Muel
The grinder I used for the last 4 years of me riding cost £7. It worked. Decent grinders might last longer, but will it last 5 times longer? Not worth 5 times as much in my eyes then. (You mentioned spending £40ish, £35 would be 4 of my grinder). dirt jumper jake
Hitachi. i dont use the same size as you as i use a 9" grinder on rims, but my hitachi is bloody brilliant. had it ages too.
Alex Dark
right well i will be doing a fair bit of other work with it... ive done a lot to my mototrial project with a sanding disc, and a fair amount of cutting recently. I tend to side with you though luke, something like a "cheap" ( low-end ) Bosch seems like the way to go
Luke Rainbird
From rebuilding boat trailers, working on cars etc grinders always end up getting pretty full of shit after a while, it's unfortunately the nature of the beast in a lot of cases. Unless you're going to go all out and buy some full-on top of the range kit, something entry-level from a reputable brand fits the bill nicely,
AdamR28
Spend your £40, but get the one with the longest warranty you can find for when it breaks
monkeyseemonkeydo
The grinder I used cost £7. £35 would be 4 of my grinder. Uh huh... something like a "cheap" ( low-end ) Bosch seems like the way to go That's what I got around 10 years ago and it's still going strong . Mine probably cost about £15. Alex Dark
Sweeet, good advice everyone! Im thinking something like this: hitachi or Bosch
CurtisRider
I have both the Bosch and Makita grinders that cost about 45-50 each. Both have been great and get plenty of abuse! The Makita has less power but is slimmer and easier to hold, the Bosch has more power and is slightly larger but still not that hard to hold (just the Makita feels better). Both seem good for warranty too, according to the retailer i got them from (that i have used for quite some time so i trust them) Cheap grinders suck if you use them often, every one i have bought has either fallen apart or burnt out within a few months, definately false economy if you use it regularly
