cant_ride
Hi guys, Mainly for all the old schoolers and metallurgists: After last week's precipitous Red Bull event I've noticed a few tiny rust patched developing on my Marino frame (being steel) I usually get in the habit of lightly greasing any exposed metal to stop it getting attacked but obviously not this time. Can anyone advise the best way to remove and protect the rusted areas? Also, to what extent is rust a danger in the middle of a tube. How quickly will a frame corrode beyond use? I would treat it like a disease and forcibly remove the rust (sandpaper etc..) and then either try a sprat job or just grease it. Any other thoughts that may help me and few other people here? Cheers Oli
super
Caustic is good at killing rust. However dipping your whole frame might be a bit tricky - you could always do it in the bath and leave it to soak for an hour. As soon as it comes out you'll have to dry it and then coat it with something to stop it corroding again. You'll also want be careful with any caustics cause they're pretty nasty if you get it in your eyes etc. Bilt Hamber - Deox C seems quite popular amongst automotive restoration people, might be worth a try but i don't think it's particularly cheap. It'll prob be quite a long time before you see any significant structural problems with rust.
Revolver
Is it a raw finish? If it's not, you can use etch primer which I've heard eats into rust and stops it going further. Wire brush it down first, mind, dunno how bad it is but you might just be alright doing that.
err
if it's really crusty (which i doubt by the sound of it) then kurust is good, you paint it on the rust and it neutralises it so you can paint over it but like revolver said, if it's only surface you can just wire brush it back and touch it up
