Joe Papasnap Maher
Hi Guys, Looking for a Desktop PC for work purposes ( Just the tower, no screen/keyboard ). Needs to be able to handle large file size pictures, quickly, whilst multi tasking with other programs. Ideally i want a seperate graphics card, as oposed to an integrated one. I know roughly what i want, but all of the amd/intel processors confuse me, and i dont know which would be best for the purpose that i need. Must Have plenty of Ram, and Harddrive space. Budget, £300. Something along the lines of this.. http://www.ebuyer.com/279904-acer-aspire-m1930-desktop-pt-sgce9-006 Does that sound about right?? Also, doesnt have to bought from ebuyer, can be bought anywhere..lots of towers on ebay. Also, doesnt HAVE to come with an opperating system either
Monty99
i have a lot to do with large sized picture editing (5dMk2, D7000) using RAW-files in CS5 and Lightroom 3. i dont know what you will be using or which files you are talking about, but that tower you posted (or any other £300 tower) will not make you happy when editing or working with big files. the biggest weaknesses will be the cpu and the non-ssd-harddisc (btw a serious ssd costs you about a third of what you are willing to spend on the whole system). i built a £600 tower in february and it's barely strong enough. Azarathal
The i3 isnt actually a bad processor for the cost, doesnt list the speed of ram but I assume it'd be 1333mhz. That "intel graphics card" is actually just the gpu built onto either the motherboard or the cpu (can't remember if the i3 has on-die or not) and will be terrible for anything graphics related. Revolver
The plus side is you could add £50 and get a dedicated GPU from somewhere else, but it would be over your budget.

Ive got an i3 (albeit a 2.93 running at 4.01ghz) and Ive no complaints with it as a processor. Its a hyperthreading dual core so its not a true quad core but can run 4 simultaneous threads. It has the gpu built onto the die so you may need a seperate card depending on your requirements. Obviously to keep the price down on the box they will have had to use cheaper components elsewhere, probably the motherboard, memory and psu (which may cause issues adding a dedicated gpu). Joe Papasnap Maher
Wow, all so technical..didnt realise there was really that much to it. Ok..When i say graphics..im not talking anything to serious. Simple colour corrections, image resizing, captioning.

Simple colour corrections, image resizing, captioning. I would imagine that the onboard should be sufficient for photoshop and the like, your main sticking points are the cpu/memory speed and hard disk throughput. Im going to hazard a guess that it will be fine for what you need
Muel
Aye I'd say there's no reason for a stand alone car, but I'm not even going to look at builds to be honest because it's not clear what you're after. "Large picture files", you mean editing the ones you take for work or graphic design work? (I know people who have photoshop files that are 3gb+). Is that all it will do? No video editing or anything?

Muel
Cheap nasty case, RAM, PSU and motherboard. Brilliant value! You can get i3 for that money, which is far superior to an old Athlon II dual core.
Shaun H
My link these seem rather good just need an os. Jesus Christ that case is ugly. If you're using this for work it might also be worth thinking about a RAID 1 upgrade for your data (2 hard drives running as mirror images). If you stand to lose significant work (i.e. it will cost you money) if you lost data then RAID 1 gives you a bit of peace of mind if one drive craps out (still vulnerable to things like power surges etc though)
Muel
Raid is great but shouldn't be relied on IMO. Always best to have an external backup as well, kept unplugged preferably elsewhere. (I don't bother as everything I can't bare to lose fits in my dropbox account).
