Hey guys, basically, ive got a set of 26 wheels, with an speed cog on the rear and a single speed on the from cranks, do i need a rear mech??

does it have to go to the bars to control it with a shifter??

how can i get it down to a single speed??

is it best to just put a shifter on and stretch the mech out along the frame??

i was gunna get a tensioner but the wheels come with 8speed cogs so its kinda baffled me!!

Dont laugh ive been out of the game for a while :P

im building an old school type trials bike out of some saracen xile trials bits ive got lying around while im off work :P

Check out a single speed kit from Tartybikes - you'll need a cassette lockring tool, a chain whip and that kit to go single speed. You'll then need a tensioner or rear mech to keep the chain nice and tight.

You could just run the 8 gears at the back for now though - it's just extra weight and you don't need all those gears..

right i see how that would work yea, and its not to bad a way of doing it, so where does the gear ratio come from on that, my front crank is quite small, not as small as a middle burn, but is rather small, its a truvitav set :/

oh and whats a chain whip??

ok im with you now, ive already got a bottom bracket tool, which is the same as the one you mentioned?? and a chain tool, ive got one of those as im a plumber :)

Bottom bracket tool isn't the same as a lockring tool, as far as I'm aware, even though they look very similar.

Lockring tool

Chain whip

Single Speed Kit

Tensioners
