Riding Brakeless

Recommended Posts

I'd advise doing whatever you want to do. Riding with brakes first would probably be a good idea, but if you start off brakeless then you could just come up with something totally new by finding your own way of doing things.

It's always better to start with your brakes, brakeless trials is (in my opinion) mainly for riders who have mastered all the basic skills and they just want to have a laugh. I don't think I've ever met anyone who has gone brakeless, and stayed brakeless.

Do the easy thing, and use your brakes! You'll improve and learn much faster with them as well.

If brakeless is what you want to do, I'd say go straight for it. You'll be more motivated to do it if it's what you want to do.

Give it a decent amount of time... It'll take a while to pick up - certainly for the more trialsy bits - 'cause it's hard. Fact.

If you've given it a good long try and still can't get the hang of it then it's time to put some brakes on and learn better how to handle the bike. Once you've gotten that done, think about taking them back off - you might get attached to them whilst you have them. Never know.

Yeah, it's a stupid idea starting brakeless, you wont have all the general balance that most people have. Once you've mastered the basics then I'd think of it if that's how you'd like to ride.

I can't disagree more. If it's what he wants to do, he'll be more motivated to do it.

Putting brakes on won't magically give him balance. I don't know anyone who started brakeless so it's impossible to say, but I'd wager you'd pick up some balance at the same rate with or without brakes.

Actually - maybe without would be slightly quicker (if more frustrating) since there is less room for error.

Well... there's the same amount of room, but there's more areas for concern.
