Right-o,

I got a couple of said adaptors today, they say on them "Non-earthed appliances only". I'm a retard in this respect, so can someone help me out?

I want to use camera battery charger, AA battery charger and phone charger out in Europe. Are these adaptors suitable?

Gracias.

Something that's weak isn't earthed. You can tell because on the plug the earth prong is plastic.

So if your charger plug has a plastic earth prong, it doesn't matter. And if it does, you decide if you want the risk of if it breaks it not earthing.

Haha, I'll let you find it.

I think that plugs in europe aren't earthed. All it means is that anything plugged in the adaptor isn't earthed, meaning if it breaks and shorts, it's not earthed so it might hurt you.

Similarly, in england some electrical goods come with a plastic prong for the earth prong. This means that they aren't earthed. This is usually because they're so low powered it won't damage you if it shorts out.

Any appliances that have this double insulated symbol do not need earthed: fig7.jpg

Your items sound like they'd all be double insulated.

You make me feel safe, with your talk of nice symbols, which are present on my appliances.

Who should I trust?!

Very few things need earthing seperately nowadays. A (relitively) new earthing system called PME (Protective Multiple Earths) incorporates the neutral and earth cables together at source of entry (incoming mains), so at each socket, the neutral and earth sockets do pretty much the same job. Although how relevant this is abroad, I am not so sure!

Added to that, unless the item is metal cased, there isnt really a need for it to be earthed (in the case of protecting the user from shock anyway), so if the appliance is plastic (which if its double insulated, it will be), there is no need to worry.
