My Bb7 Squeals.

Hello, I have a 203 mm Avid BB7 front disc brake on a trialtech fork and when I ride for example to go from a spot to another, I get a squealing noise which is very very loud from my front brake.

If I pull the lever it won't stop, if I ride faster it will slowly stop, but as soon as I get to a normal speed it starts again. It does it a lot when I ride very slowly for example on flat pedal kicks. I really don't know what to do. I have tried setting my brake again and it doesn't change a thing. I have made researches and nothing works. I really don't know what to do. It didn't do it until I remove my front wheel to get the bike inside the car. But changing the wheel position doesn't change anything either...

Please help me! Thanks.

Squealing or honking?

Squealing is somewhat normal for disks although it doesnt tend to be particularly loud. Honking is contaminated pads/rotor, could be from greasy fingers or too much oil run down the cable.

Check all the rotor and caliper bolts are tight, it could be resonation of rotor when you apply braking force to it.

I have checked all that. I would call it honking then as it is really loud. All bolts are tight. My pads are not contaminated and the brake performance hasn't changed. It isn't the the rotor that is untrue either as it does that noise all round the rotor and not on a particular place. I really don't understand. Something is rubbing as it makes me slow down , but I can't tell what it is...

Honking is normally contaminated pads, although if its still working properly its probably just a resonant frequency in the rotor/pads/caliper/hub/spokes. Have you actually cooked the pads off and wiped the rotor round with some alcohol?

I had a problem with my front mono trial, it would make a continuous droning noise (like a loud car horn) when push forwards at any speed but none going backwards; after facing the mounts, rebleeding and checking everything it was the disk that had dished and was constantly catching on the edge of one pad, causing a vibration that was amplified by the spokes. Might be worth putting a flat edge (a steel ruler works well) across the face of the disk to see if its still completely flat and true :)

It could either be;

1. Your pads are dead (buy new ones)

2. You have dirt trapped between the pads and disk (take them out and put them in a pan of boiling water)

3. Your brake needs setting up properly (it could be dragging)

Hope this helps.

Are either of the pads touching the rotor? (ie, if you spin the wheel does it slow down quickly or just spin freely on the hub bearings?)

My Hope squeals when it's cold, works fine though so i'm not particularly fussed!

Sometimes mine sings to me. It's because there's a tiny bit of pad touching the rim and it makes the rotor vibrate.

If I put my wheel in and do it up with the bike the right way up it usually doesn't do it, but if it does, if I give the wheel a tap with my foot it stops.

Or, you could set up your brake again, with new pads possibly.

My brake is nearly new and pads are deffinetly not contaminated. I will try all you said on Thursday and let you know by then. My brake does make a sound when going forward but none when going backwards. My rotor is true and completely new.

Thanks a lot.
