Learning To Fall Off?!?

Basically I've really started to get the hang of manuals and endos.. With sufficient injurys... My boyfriend recons i need to now learn to fall off properly before taking it further. He wants me to endo so i go over the bars and manual till i come off the back (already do with manuals but land 1 footed)! Anyway i do not like the sound of forcing myself to go over the bars! Do i listern to him or call him an idiot for trying to make me hurt myself!

as for going off the back you should just jump with both feet at the same time off your pedals and land those feet at the same time.

As for going over the front you should have a leg either side of the frame NOT entirely over the bars, doing that could cause an even worse bale and possibly injury.

Hell no, learning to bail over the front is the best thing I ever did. Check the first bail in our London Session video from the weekend - that could've gone far worse if I didn't know how to clear the bars...

Depends what you're doing. If it's nose manuals and stuff, if you don't get over the bars you're going to get tangled up and lie down.

I wouldn't say you've got to force yourself to do either of them really - with manuals, to learn them properly you've got to go over the back a few times so I'm sure it'll all come naturally.

Just ride and enjoy yourself, when you 1st start to fall off you brain will subconsciously do what it thinks is best in a millisecond you can't control that. However as you fall off more you will adapt your technique to minimize pain. Its just common sense.

Pulling your front brake till you endo over the front would be hysterical to watch you do, I mean if you do it please film it because I will piss myself. But will probably be painful and counterproductive to your development on a bike as it will dent your confidence (or your front teeth) for when you pull an endo the next time, cos you will be bricking it.

For going over the back on a manual - if your learning to manual, and "falling off by putting 1 foot down then your not going fast enough. So go faster and if your coming off the back (which is a lot later than you would think) suck your knees in and push your front down, which will lower the front and you wont come off. (or you can pull your rear brake) Just make sure you step back and put 2 feet down and the same time then you can "run it out", if you put one foot down you will just "spin" that way and fall off.

Being able to hop over the bars from the pedals is a very usefull skill to learn in my opinion. Imagine youve just gapped down to a wall that has another drop on the far side of over 2 foot and you havent landed with your weight far enough back, youre going over the bars no matter what and not being able to hop them is going to cause pain. Do it on grass first, hurts a lot less ;)

When youre riding on obstacles, always look for a bail route, preferably somewhere with a flat solid surface you can easily aim your feet for; landing with bad footing is a great way to roll your ankles.

Deciding whether or not to let go of the bars is another one that takes time to learn the pros and cons. If I need to bail from a height, I tend to jump up off the bike but hold onto the bars (especially if Im bailing from two wheels) so I can use the bike as support whilst spotting a landing for my feet.

The difference being with that is that if the front end's actually falling away, you're making the height of the bar you've got to jump lower because it's moving away. If it's just an endo on flat, it's staying constant and you've got to get your salmon on and leap up that shit...

True, but if youre deliberately overcooking an endo then the BB/back wheel is up in the air making your initial take off position pretty similar; you need to push up and forwards off the pedals whilst hurdling the bars that hopefully havent rotated enough to catch your ankles and send you base over apex. Obviously it isnt exactly the same but either way its pretty good skill to have :)

call him an idiot

Fall from a manual is nothing really, I've never really 'fallen', just come off and landed on my feet, when I tried going faster I fell off the back, scuffed my feet along the floor, tried to sprint to keep up with the bike and ended up jumping back on, all while keeping hold of the bars. Endo-ing until you go over the bars will be amazing. I suggest you do it. You could send it in to Mr T's Craziest Fools and become an hero.

I meant that you can sort of kick the bike down more if the bike's actually falling, if that makes sense... Going over the bars on flat has claimed me more than going over the bars in that 'messing up a gap' type way.
