Just reading up on freeganism, which is basically getting everything you can for free including food, in which "freegans" root though supermarket bins and pillage as much food thats in date as they can. anybody admit to doing this? a friend of mine at university managed to pull 2 in date crates of stella out of a co op bin, to which i sprinted down there my mate cracked open a bin and was greeted with a dodgy smell and no beer :(

Freeganism isn't all about bin raiding the local co-op bins.

My Dad know quite a lot about plants and such so often goes on walks/cycle and finds loads of fruit bearing plants on public property in the suburbs/countryside. He's found everything from raspberries to apple/pear trees full of fruit.

iolo and myself used to raid supermarket bins. Found loads of good food, one time though we did get caught by the police but we didnt take anything off the supermarket property that time so we couldn't get done for theft, but we did get a warning for tresspassing and advice from the officers saying if we do it again, its best to wait till later when there are fewer people about haha :-

My instant reaction is "f**k you trampy ass bastards" because i wouldn't want to waste my time looking round a shitty old bin for food, but i guess i can see why some people may do it.

I must admit, if i want food or drink i'll buy it, or go to one of the many endless gallery openings in London and have a night of free drink, but the idea of rooting round a manky old bit does disgust me somewhat. You've only got one life and i don't mind if contained within that life are elements of luxury. Granted i'm not the richest man in the world but things would have to be pretty bad for me to look for walkers crisps in a skip.

I think there's more integrity in stealing.

Having said all this, i did once eat a half eaten cucumber i found on a wall when i was about 17, so what the f**k do i know?

Health and safety, lawyers, red tap and do-gooders are responsible for supermarkets not being able to give it all away to homeless people.

As if a homeless person gives a shit if his sandwich is technically out of date, it's food after all. And only an idiot doesn't realise that when something hit's the 'best before' date it doesn't immediately turn into stomach aids.

I absolutely hate how much food gets wasted, can't say I've done any dumpster scrumping myself but I don't see anything wrong with it. I just wish it didn't end up in the bin in the first place.

Well, thats scrumping surely?

I have no issue with people doing it, and I can certainly see the benefits. However, when on Earth do you get the time to go looking through bins - obviously under cover of darkness, on a Sunday as it tends to be the only time that supermarkets are shut these days?

The waste of food is pretty criminal, although I really couldn't be arsed sifting through the shit to find a couple of quids worth of food.

I was under the impression a lot of stores now open the packaging or soil it to prevent all this?

Imagine how much waste a bakery has at the end of each day, within a 5 minute walk from my house I could name at least 8 bakerys/ cafe type places, all who at the end of each day are bound to have stock left over. This stock is not even a day old, no chance of being damaged or OOD but it just gets thrown away. I can easily see why people do it, there is so much to be had if you are not fussed on a dirty wrapper.

Places that deliberately put things in with thrown out food to make it inedible is stupid and out of order in my eyes, they seem to have the vision of we cant sell it so noone else can have it.

I'm pretty certain they do that because 'the man' says they have to..

This, but I ate cornflakes out of a bin (playing 'Eat that!').

There's a shop near me called Rays, and they get everything that's out of date and sell it mega cheap, some epic stuff sometimes, mostly shit though, and buying anything's a gamble.

Why don't they just lower the price down and sell this stuff for next to nothing? That's what we used to do at work. 10p kit-cat chunkies etc.

At sainsbury's they try, but the amount of bread and cakes alone that's to be thrown outweighs the people who come in buying it.

You do get odd people who come in and raid the super-reductions at night. I don't like it because I can't see how they can eat all of it, not all of it's freezable and some of it will only have a day or two past the sell-by of goodness in them.
