piperfraz
For a while my bike was making a creaking noise, but now I'm pretty sure its my BB. So my mate told me to put some lube on it. I've now taken my cranks off, but I'm just wondering which bit I should lube. Any help would be appreciated

Any help would be appreciated Are you going to take it out completely to lube it? If you are I think you will need a bottom bracket tool/adaptor which allows you to unsrew it completely and take it out to clean up and lube. This is certainly the case on mountain bikes but never had my trials bike BB out to be honest. Depending on your BB it may well look something like this Again, I'm basing this on servicing MTB bottom brackets so trials bikes may be different Edited July 21, 2011 by kaybs41282

But yeah that BB tool is what's used for trials, my mate used one the other day Edited July 21, 2011 by piperfraz
Simpson
It generally creaks when the bearings go a bit. Whack it out using the tool shown above. (depends what BB you have though) pull out the BB, copper grease up all moving parts whack back in happy days If the creaks really bad though it wont do much. When you pedal does it "feel" smooth. Matthew62
Grease on BB's, not lube. If you don't know how to take one out, or don't have the right tool, or your mechanical skills are lakcing, take it to a bike shop and get them to help. forteh
Creaking is caused by two unlubricated surfaces moving together. Typically its the interface between the BB and frame that is causing the creaking; take the whole BB out, grease up the threads, also put some inside the cups where the BB cartridge sits. I think greasing the spindle depends on whether its taper or ISIS, I only use taper and personally dont grease them and have never suffered with creaking; if memory serves me correctly its advisable to lightly grease ISIS. It's an Onza square taper BB Do you mean is there any resistance when I pedal? If thats what you mean then no.

It will only be the bearings creaking if theyre completely dry of grease, as theyre sealed units thats unlikely unless youve been blasting them with a jetwash and washed it all out. You dont need much grease in there, just a light smear with your finger over the threads and inside the cups
