Boswell
I am a student and was working a part time job at PizzaHut which I left in Sept 2010 on a pay rate of £5.60ish (min wage 21+ back then). I have now returned to a nice new wage of £4.92 which I had no option but to accept because I needed a job to enjoy the summer. This would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that my mate(19) also returned from Uni at another local hut and was placed on £5.95 Ph. I was told I could be placed on a higher pay rate because of new policies but clearly some get special treatment! I'm obiously going to speak to the manager but what do I say? (I'm 20)

Boswell
Is this legal?
Tony Harrison
It's legal to ask, however, your boss isn't breaking the law - he's offered you minimum wage for your age, and you have accepted. There's no law that says people must be paid the same across each grade. It might be that your mate's boss is a bit fairer, or that your mate has made a particularly good impression on him. Who knows. I'd politely ask for it to be reviewed, and if he says no then make a decision on what to do next.
JT!
We had an issue like this where I used to work. There was a group of us who used to work at this shop, then it got sold. We were all earning minimum wage for 23/24+ (can't remember what age is the highest tier is) even though we had people who were 18 working there, we all got paid the same. When the shop changed hands we all kept our hourly income, some new staff was taken on, a black 18 year old girl was of one of them who was to be paid at minimum wage for an 18 year old. So we had two people doing the exact same job and different rates of pay. One was a white guy, the other a black girl, which made the situation twice as worse. Unfortunately, I never knew what happened. But because you are working at a different place all you can do is ask but I wouldn't expect much. Simpson
Is this legal? Is it legal to pay different people doing the same job different amounts? AH DERRRR course it is.
anzo
Maybe a daft question, but is there a difference in working hours? I hear this a lot from my mates, usually bragging there on £15 an hour, but fail to mention they only work 5 hours a week or so. Of course there not obliged to pay the same rate - as far as fairness goes in pay rates, welcome to the working world.
