Truing A Wheel

Can anyone give me some tips on straightening my wheels up? Never really done it myself so gonna be a first, I assume you simply tighten the spokes on the opposite side to the way the wheel is out?

Do you start with the spoke in the middle of the bend or at the end and work your way round till its straight??

You've got it basically bang on - if the middle of the bend lines up with a spoke you'd need to tighten then do that maybe 1/2 turn, but also turn the spokes next to it (on the same side of the wheel) a 1/4 each. If the middle of the bend is between 2 spokes you'd need to tighten, just do them both the same amount. Theoretically you should also loosen the spokes on the other side of the rim as well, to keep the rim round as well as straight - I never bother though.

Typically its just a case of tightening the nipple on the side in which you want the rim to move, if its really bad you might have to loosen the opposite side slightly.

To even out the spoke tensions, tighten the target spoke 1/2 turn at a time and one forward and back of it (on the same side) by 1/4 turn; you can within reason pro rata the amount you turns on each spoke.

Have a read through sheldon browns trueing guide and that will explain it all properly :)

edit: damn you jd :(

Cheers lads, will get a spoke key ordered and give it a try. I always forget bout sheldon browns site!

Get the best spoke key you can, having been building wheels for the last 15 years Ive found that the park ones are by far the most comfortable to use, also fit very well so result in minimal nipple rounding :)
