casualjoe
I have brakes although I try to ride as much as possible without them, I'd die if I took my brakes off because I jump about like a mad man sometimes. Taking your brakes off completely is scary and I would only consider it if I become bored of trials which I am certainly not. I've seen people ride lines in trials that are damn amazing and I'm still trying to do them, I might never be able do them but I enjoy trying. JD™
Get out more. lol The last load of replies (mine included, Marks excluded) have been uber gay to the max. Let's all just get along eh? Upshot: Adam, if you want to know why brakeless bikes are brakeless the absolute best way to find out is to try it. That's all Matt was trying to say, in his own ridiculous way. monkeyseemonkeydo
Please use capital I's in your replies. I can barely understand what it is you're trying to converse with all those i's.
Matthew62
Yeah i don't really go in for all that grammar nazi stuff, but thanks for the tip. Interestingly it should be noted that the use of uppercase I's when talking about oneself is something that is used purely in the English language. Granted that's what we're conversing in here, but other languages don't place a dominance on oneself by capitalizing whatever word or letter is used to represent the writer or first person. Some professional writers choose note to use uppercase I's when writing in first person as they feel is gives a sense of dominance over the reader as in a sense it puts them in a higher order, as it's not a case of 'you and i' but of, 'you and I'. I quite like this theory of using a lower case i as a form of equality. I appreciate you're more a man of science so you prefer things done a bit more strictly, and probably think it's all a bit wishy-washy. I've seen people ride lines in trials that are damn amazing and I'm still trying to do them, I might never be able do them but I enjoy trying. There's more than one way to skin a cat Equally, having seen how ridiculously good Rowan and Ali are at riding 'pure' trials brakeless there's still a lot of more dedicated trials stuff you can do brakeless. Aside from it just being a hell of a lot more fun, I also really like the feeling of getting a line spot on. If you don't have brakes to rely on, you have to do everything pretty much perfectly. The feeling of being exactly on the balance point is awesome, knowing that you put your wheels exactly where they needed to be, you had your weight exactly where you needed it to be, you put the power down exactly right, etc., it's just rad and it's a feeling I found I never really got to the same extent when I had brakes on. Not shit-talking brakes there or anything, it's just an 'IMO' thing I suppose. I find it really weird going back to riding brakes now because I'm so used to the little weird rolls and movements your bike does at certain points in moves that when your wheels are locked in place it's just 'wrong' feeling.

arw_86
sweetness, might give it a go sometime then. Kinda nervous trying it though as i love my brakes and i'll do the whole "if i take them off i'll never be able to set them up as good again!" plus Rainbird will be sniffing around trying to buy them off me haha! thanks for the decent replies guys. mark w - 'these days' to me refers to last few years, and 'cool' makes it sound like im triyng to be annoying. I mean more 'popular' back in the days of evolve, contact, bi-king etc etc...then it wasnt around as much, is what i was trying to say matthew62 - im just gonna walk away mate Edited July 6, 2011 by arw_86
casualjoe
You can get plenty off good vibes from riding a line without having to touch your brakes, there's still that amazing 'perfect' feeling. Just without the ridiculous crashes Edit, crashes by me anyways haha Edited July 6, 2011 by casualjoe

Sam Nichols
If you ever end up on a ride with me I think you'll quickly understand why I need brakes. I can barely ride with brakes!

Just without the ridiculous crashes Edit, crashes by me anyways haha Yeah, but riding with brakes but not using them isn't the same as not having brakes though, in much the same way that you know you don't have the 'safety net' or anything like that so it feels that much better (for me, anyway). You get a feel for when shit's about to go pear shaped anyway, so you can usually avoid getting badly tangled up in the crashes the more you ride brakeless. JD™
Do climbers say that they don't get why people climb without ropes, because they get the same feeling when they don't fall to their death while wearing harnesses?

Muel
I'm sorry you failed to understand what i said, but i have explained it and i think it wise not to accuse anything and everything you fail to understand as 'bollocks'. Also i never refused to answer, my original comment was the answer. And technically saying "if you have to ask then you'll never know" is very much a reply - that's actually exactly 100% what it is. It has absolutely no reference or truth to what you said: "it's just you saying you're not going to even try and explain it." So to surmise, i gave an original answer (adequate enough for those willing to think) then retorted with an explanation (unnecessary i feel) for those who failed to understand my original comment, and yet you're still puzzled. So explanation and answer were both given which makes your reply about being bollocks totally invalid. My answer was just not in the traditional TF manner - It's different, you have to try it to understand really Reply, yes. Answer the question, errm no I don't think so. "Excuse me, can you direct me to the bus station?" "If you have to ask you'll never know". "Excuse me, do you think my bum looks big in this?" "If you have to ask you'll never know". At best it's a statement which implies and answer, but an answer is it actually exactly 100% what it isn't. A question requests information, and answer provides it. He's none the wiser, therefore it's not really an answer to the question. It's about as useful as: "Fancy a pint?" "I feel really pretty today." Thus, and in conclusion, bollocks. The explanation you provided afterwards, that's a partial answer. It doesn't offer any enlightenment, but it does tell the reader what they need to do to find it. (In this case, go and try it).
JD™
Gotta say I think you're missing the point Sam. In the other questions you put, yes it's silly, but in terms of the way something feels it's as good an answer as any. He's already explained the answer, but again it's about the mindset - if you have to ask why people take their brakes off, then you probably never will. Simple. Matthew62
Take it easy honey. You still don't get it and that's fine. Just try to expand your thoughts a little and hopefully it'll make sense. The reply refers to a lot of things, and rather than being a literal-nerdy-pedantic-dungeons-and-dragons-slaying-ass-moody-comment-on-every-f**king-thing-square-boring-to-the-letter sort of a person just try and think another way. It's a direct quote from Louis Armstrong when at a party he was asked by a woman: "what's jazz" he replied: "if you have to ask, you'll never know" and it makes perfect sense. So i'll go and leave now and allow you to cool down rather than getting angry with a complete stranger over the internet about 8 little words and go over to bollocks corner with Louis. Edit: also in answer to the first question you posted (Excuse me, can you direct me to the bus station?) then my response wouldn't be adequate as their is a factual answer so of course you wouldn't reply that way. "Excuse me, do you think my bum looks big in this?" My response could be used here, if you were answering purely on the basis of how you wanted the woman to feel. If you were being honest about your feelings and wanted to express that then you wouldn't use it. The last one" "Fancy a pint?" "I feel really pretty today." That's just f**king stupid and indicates to me that clearly you're not capable of intellectual thought and are just attempting some sort of online one up-man-ship, which frankly is pathetic. I was just merely expressing my honest views, you seem to want to win some sort of contest. I’m not battling with you, i’m just having my opinion which you can’t classify as WRONG just because you don’t agree, or more accurately understand. I think frankly you’re being a bit silly.
