Duct Tape As Rim Tape

Hi all,

Just started getting punctures again all of a sudden, didn't get any for years and suddenly I've had 4 in 2 rides. Frustrating. I have a feeling now that it might be something to do with the fact I'm running higher and higher pressures with just Duct tape as rim tape in my holey rims. I run 2 layers of the stuff generally - is that the norm for people running this setup? I get a bit nervous pumping up new tubes now because the tape appears so far through the holes... When I upgrade rims I'll definitely go for solid ones, but suggestions in the mean time?

Current setup is Megamo 'Cheese' rims, Duct tape, 3" specialized tubes and Holy Rollers. 26". Nowt in the tyres, and they're all pinch flats at an assortment of pressures from 30-40psi.

My XC bike has had duct tape rim tape for at least 3 years now, no problems.

Electrical tape is a different matter - don't use that.

Usually you can tell by looking at the puncture itself - little bubbles where the inner tube has 'herniated' through a hole in the rim tape result in funny star-shaped punctures.

Cheers guys, I think they're just normal pinches in that case - I must just be riding worse! Gonna go with another layer of tape because I've never ever used 'proper' rim tape in 12 years of riding. I have an irrational (note this word when you go to reply) hatred of the stuff.

Ive had electrical tape on my back wheel for 3 years now

Are you still on smooth rims? If youve recently ground them, you could have left a burr on the outside of the rim which will cause pinches :)

If you ever see me with a ground rim I give you full permission to hit me over the head with the nearest heavy object.

Didnt think you did :)

Pop the tyre off and check for burrs anyways, only needs to be a sharp edge. Failing that, use thicker tubes if it is pinches.

Shall do :) Pretty sure those Spesh tyres are meant to be rather thick but I'll find thicker! It's weird because I was using some sort of 1.9" crap bike shop special tube before this load of pinches and that lasted a long while. Ah well, just a bit of bad luck I reckon.
