Learning To Ride Trials

Hi all,

I've been riding trials for just about a month so here I'm posting some (very bad) videos of how I'm doing..actually they're more for me to see myself from the outside but I'd really love some help on improving :turned:

The garden is really small..not much space to do much in there..

Anyway here I'm trying out back wheel hops..might have got camera fright because I was doing better before I started filming..

Well..not really day one but first day I actually dedicated to working on them

Not bad. I see youre doing pretty well. I'm getting to that stage now. I can get on the back wheel ok but i cant hold it for long but I'm thinking about trying to add in the hop as well now so next week i know what I'm aiming for.

I can get about 8 hops when I'm lucky >_<

I tend to mess up with the brake..if I hold it I hop sort of ok but when I let go of it to readjust the cranks I start messing up >_<

i saw someone on the forum say something about trying the actual braking and pedaling flat on the ground so you don't have to worry about balancing or anything and then when you get used to that part, try it properly on the back wheel. i haven't tried it but it worked for someone else.

How would you brake and pedal on flat?:ermm:

i dunno. he just said he couldnt get used to the letting go of the brake and kicking and braking again so he tried on the ground and it helped him. i wouldnt have thought it would be that hard but i dont know i havent tried yet.

I'd say I'm at a similar skill level at the moment but I can't side hop like that. Infact i'm gonna go practice that now. :)

Damn I wish I had people to ride with.

Same for me >_< It's hard to learn when you've got no one to watch

one thing i noticed dude is that your trackstanding fine when preperaing for a move but then when you hopped onto the curb your pedals were nearly vertical keep em horizontal and keep tall on the bike and you will find your balance will improve

also in the first video try going to back wheel from flat rather than having the bike already in position will help you learn the balance points if the bike is nice and tall your weight has to be quite high if the bike is hovering above the ground you need your weight way back to counter it, play around with it as long as you got the brake you wont shoot over the back im by no means a pro but just a few things i found made learning easier for me mate (Y)

I’ll try that..I seem to have to pedal kick really hard to get on the back wheel and that throws my balance off..don’t know if I’m doing something wrong here

Also when I get up I go back really fast so sometimes I miss the braking point and fall backwards

About the jumping on the curbs I’ll have to look at the slow-mo to see what I’m doing wrong

Thanks for the help ^^

instead of trying to pedal kick into it at the moment just try lifting the front from a standing position or if you have access to a large curb or garden bench put your front wheel on there pull back hop once and then place back down and keep doing it until you can hop for seeminly forever. if you can get hold of ryan leechs "the art of trials" its a worthy investment i followed it whilst learning all the basics and it really helped me out, and he does go onto more advanced moves etc, you'll soon get the hang of the balance point, (Y)

Yeah I got that video off some shady recess of the internet

Great mate, thanks for the help ^_^ I'll do another video in a few months time and I hope I'll be much better by that time (it'll be a better video so no one gets pissed off at me)^_^

I've been riding all day 3 times and ive been out for a couple of hours in the evenings about 3 times. How long have you been riding for? and your sidehops are pretty good but try getting up something higher and being a little closer to the object so you don't waste power going so far sideways. post on members organised rides and organise meeting up somewhere and I'm sure there will be a few people around to ride with and show you how to do things and improve. You will also be more motivated because everyone else is riding so you will want to keep riding.

I've been riding about a month 2 or 3 times a week..not really focused on learning though..just messing about

I'm trying to get into focus now and actually start working on technique. Sidehops I'm trying to see how far I can actually go  I'm completely unable to do them on my bad foot side though..need to work alot on that

Yeah, I'm looking for people to ride with..I'm meeting up with a guy in Dublin and next week I'm off to Limerick hopefully to ride with some other guys ^_^ Then in september when I'll be back in Italy I'll be able to ride with my friends (at last):giggle:

Why don't you film yourself? I'm really curious about seeing other beginners ;)

trashzen is great, it tells you everything. i have nothing to record with that would be decent quality and i dont wanna make a fool of myself because i probably look really stupid. i can do things on either side, i tend not to though because of my derailleur and how it tends to be a magnet to walls and steps  ive messed the hanger up so bad. when the tensioner goes on il properly straighten out the hanger and it should all be alot better.

Know what? With half the money of a hope 2 you can get a trialtech 135mm fixed hub+freewheel of your choice ^_^
