I wouldn't worry too much about the weight of one. If your just learning you don't wanna be looking for something lightweight as that usually means snap happy when you are doing stuff for the first time and bashing about. Coming from a 26" mountain bike background you may be more comfortable on a 26" (stock) than a 20" (mod) though if there's any riders near to where you live it might be worth trying to catch them on a ride so you can have a feel of the difference, there's no doubt it's easier to pick up a lot of things on a mod but if it doesn't feel right to ride then thats no use!

The Phase 1.1 and 1.2 don't really differ that much in spec for the extra price you'll pay for a .1 so I'd highly recommend a 1.2, if I were just starting out and wanted to buy new that's what I'd go for. Keep an eye out on eBay for some 2nd hand ones as there's usually a few knocking about.

The 1.1 is probably slightly lighter maybe due to the rear mech arm being slightly shorter and it having a different crank and BB setup though I wouldn't spend an extra £50 to lose a few grams. I'd get the 1.2 and use the £50 you've saved on a single speed kit and some decent brake pads.

Afraid not, Winstanleys at £199 is gonna be your best bet for now unless you don't mind hanging on.

If you don't mind stretching your budget quite a bit there's a great spec Ashton for sale on here that I'd gladly buy if I didn't already have enough bikes at £380 which is very cheap for the spec!

i bought a MAD Phase 1.2 from Winstanleys a month ago and dont regret it at all. only thing is youre gonna neeed some new grips if you want hands left and single speed it or you will destroy your derailleur like im currently doing until i get money for a tensioner. also i'm no pro with bikes but i think my bike is pretty light to and will be even more when i ditch the derailleur.

Basically, buy the 1.2. the 1.1 is a waste of money for the small difference in spec.

I mean hang on to see if something comes up on ebay.

No I don't think the wheel's are drilled but that shouldn't make any difference and the brakes are Magura HS33's (05 model) so the only thing they'd need is some new pads and maybe a booster.

well they come with maguras which are worth £120 for front and back brand new and it is a good bike. it also comes with high roller tyres which are also pretty good and are worth quite a bit so overall youre getting the bike pretty cheap. i think the reason the price is so low is because they are the 2010 model and theyre getting rid of them for the 2011 model but i'm not sure on that.

the wheels are not drilled and the only other thing is the hub has hardly any engagement points which kinda sucks but when you single speed it you will most likely be replacing the hub unless you do it the quick and cheap way and so you can get one with more engagement points.

also you will need some new pads too pretty quick as the magura black pads have no hold whatsoever and a booster also would be good mainly for the back as the forks doesnt flex much but the frame at the back does quite alot and thats also why you dont get as much grip with the brakes.

Hope this helps.
