koxxboy14
Hi, Looking into getting a set of vans for riding as the soles look quite grippy. Basically to anyone who rides with them, are they any good? how long does the sole last? better than trials specific shoes if you have worn them to? Any help would be appreciated Thanks
Ali C
I bought some for riding in, but have decided they are the most lethally slippery shoes I have ever worn. I have now ordered some Duffs from recommendations.

Krisboats
Used vans (malone) for riding since i started. Not the rubbishy thin ones but the proper thick tongued ones with the vulcanised floppy soles. Much better than etnies i've tried riding in due to the more flexible sole. Highly recommended from me and the vulcanised soles grip to pedals like i don't know what. I don't get a lot of choice mind with a uk 15 shoe size
p_ruskin
Got the classics and they are awesome with platform pedals with decent pins, but they get ruined and its a waste of 50quid when you could buy proper riding ones to last ages
Matthew62
There's so many different (Vans produced) shoes that you can't give an option on the entirety of Vans collection based on one shoe. I used to use Caballero Vans - they were good. I forget the make of my current ones but they are mostly leather and have lasted me (including mtbing/ commuting to work - all cycling) almost 4 years. The sole has now started to get a bit thin so i reckon i'll be looking in to some new ones soon. From my experience if you get a set with a thick sole and are well padded (with tounge holder-downer straps) then you can't go wrong. AndrewEH1
I used Vans for a while and they were grippy enough. The only issue is that the outer material that rubbed on the cranks wore away quickly, so make sure you get ones that have proper leather material as this will not rub away so quickly. I have since moved on to using Duffs as these have leather material.
AndrewG
I´ve got some old vans shoes and they are great on my trialtech caged pedals. Also my fried have one with "waffle" tread and as he said me they are great. anyway best shoes I ve ever had was adio with tread like as small bricks
ForrestDump
Not sure about Vans, however... I've also been looking for some new riding shoes as my Nike 6.0's are wearing out, I've been thinking about getting a pair of Lakai Manchester Select shoes (Here they are) as the sole looks perfect for platform pedals. Ash-Kennard
vans used to be good, but they are SHIT now! been riding in DC's recently, and they have been really really good so far. i bought bmx specific ones, big tongue, decent sole. and rollersnakes are selling them relatively cheaply now 30~ quid

TrialsIsHard
I ride in Vans Skink mid-tops and i think they are much grippier with my platform pedals. 100 times better than my old etnies, and lasting longer too.. I'd recommend them
Jedamere
i would highly recommend duffs ive got them in high tops and low. both are epic shoes its only on a rare occasion my foot will actually slip off the pedals.
Skoze
Used to ride in some old Vans with the waffle soles, were pretty good at holding in the pins but were fairly unpredictable when things got a little funky. All about DC Radars at the moment, the comfiest shoes i've ever owned and they're insanely grippy. Get involved!
Skorp
i prefer my vans to my trials shoes ( Avalanche and Ribo Lite) Last alot longer, and have a perfect sole. Good grip and not too stiff as some trials shoes.
Ali C
not happy with your 5,10s anymore? Last ones were great, but the sole was too thin and wore out too fast, the Duffs were £30 rather than £80ish for new 5-10s
ForrestDump
how you can ride in 6.0´s ? they are like as butter on pedals Mine stick fine and as far as I remember they have only slipped a few times, it's just my pins are wearing out the tread now. I'm the same, think I'm gonna take Ali's advice and try out a pair of Duffs next, found them on sale online for £19.99! Worth trying at that price!! Ali C
Duffs came today, I am seriously impressed (with the limited use I have of my feet at the moment) seem on par with my 5-10s on grip!
ForrestDump
Duffs came today, I am seriously impressed (with the limited use I have of my feet at the moment) seem on par with my 5-10s on grip! What ones did you go for Ali? Or would any of the Duffs range would be as good? Edited June 17, 2011 by ForrestDump
Ali C
mine are the Louie Lites. Any will be fine as long as they have the softer 60A sole.
Mark W
Look for the one with the dimply soles. I've had a couple of pairs and they're pretty good. Closest non-Vans shoe to the level of feel you get from Vans, but should hopefully last a bit longer. Quality seems better too, especially with how woefully shit my latest pairs of Vans have been.
